1. Optimism, with caveats
Even in an age of expansion and exploration, where the world has endless possibilities, the show’s Vikings stay grounded in reality when it comes to the life-and-death drama that pervades their lives.

“Who needs a reason for betrayal? One must always think the worst, Ragnar, even of your own kin. That way you avoid too much disappointment in life.” — Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) to Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) e

“I know it is hard for you to accept, but unhappiness is more common than happiness. Who told you you should be happy? You have come to an age where you must grow up and be responsible about such things. When I was your age, I had many friends. All are dead.” — Ragnar to his son, Bjorn (Nathan O’Toole)

2. Manifest Destiny
The Vikings continue their westward expansion, and now Ragnar has the support of King Horik (Donal Logue) in his conquests. Find out who else Ragnar brings into his ranks in the season premiere.

3. A father’s anguish
While Ragnar was away pillaging during season one, a plague swept through the Viking lands, killing his daughter, Gyda. Now that Ragnar has returned to his home village, he can give his lost child a proper goodbye, in the episode’s most poignant moment.

4. Return of the Warrior Princess
Nordic seductress Princess Aslaug shows up on Ragnar’s doorstep unannounced — and she comes “bearing” a little gift for her one-time fling.

5. Skin
TheWrap has been a somewhat vocal proponent of the rugged shirtlessness of these Scandinavian savages, and the epic battle that kicks off season two of “Vikings” certainly doesn’t disappoint.
