‘Avatar’ Rules at Visual Effects Awards

James Cameron blockbuster wins six awards; “Up” takes three

In one of the least surprising results of any awards show this season, “Avatar” dominated the Visual Effect Society Awards Sunday night at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hotel.

On a night when James Cameron also received the VES Lifetime Achievement Award, his film won in six different categories, including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Feature Motion Picture and Best Single Visual Effect of the Year.

The only feature film categories in which it did not win were Outstanding Compositing in a Feature Motion Picture, which went to “District 9,” and Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture, for which it was not eligible, which went to "Sherlock Holmes."

“Up” won all the prizes for animated features, sweeping those categories.

The VES handed out awards in 23 separate categories, covering a variety of techniques in feature film, television, commercials, videogames and student films.
