Malone’s Liberty Seeks Larger European Cable Presence

Despite losses from existing carriers, Liberty wants more

Liberty Global Inc.’s John Malone is once again looking to boost his stake in the European cable market, Bloomberg BusinessWeek reports.

The billionaire bought up local European carriers in the early 1990s but failed to duplicate his U.S. success.

In spite of that, Liberty bought Germany’s No. 2 cable operator, Unitymedia GmbH, earlier this year; and is looking for more European opportunities. Those include No. 3 cable operator Kabel Baden-Wuerttemberg, Aster City Cable in Poland, and other carriers in France, Sweden and Denmark, company executives and analysts say.

Liberty faces competition interested in the same properties, particularly private equity groups.
