HBO Greenlights ‘Veep’; Louis-Dreyfus May Star

Armando Ianucci will co-write and direct political comedy

HBO wants to make politics funny — at least intentionally so.

The premium channel announced Friday that it has greenlit “Veep,” a Washington, DC-based comedy pilot about a female vice president.

The network is also working to line up some top talent for the show including Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Fresh off popping a hole in the so-called “Seinfeld curse” with the long running “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” Louis-Dreyfus is in discussions to play the lead role.

She’s in good hands. British comedian Armando Ianucci who lampooned the “special relationship” between England and the United States so brilliantly in last year’s “In the Loop,” will co-write and direct the pilot.

Ianucci will also executive produce along with Chris Godsick and New York Times columnist Frank Rich.
