Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to Divorce

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, the Hollywood power couple, are ending their marriage, Holmes' lawyer says

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing after five years of marriage.

“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe told TheWrap in a statement. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Cruise's spokeswoman said that the actor is "deeply saddened" by the divorce, and focusing on his children.

"Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children," the statement reads. "Please allow them their privacy to work this out."

Cruise, 49, married Holmes, 33, in November 2006. They made their first public appearance together in April 2005. A month later, Cruise made an infamous appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," during which he jumped up and down on a couch while declaring his love for Holmes.

Holmes contributed her own bizarre televised moment in the early days of the couple's relationship, appearing on "Late Show With David Letterman" to declare, in a seemingly dazed, robotic manner, that Cruise was "the most amazing man in the whole world."

"Fortunately, I have known Tom for six weeks," Holmes told Letterman. "The wonderful thing is that when we met it was like "hi" and it was like instant."

The pair announced that they were expecting their first child in October 2005. Their daughter, Suri Cruise, was born in April 2006.

Career-wise, the couple have experienced wildly divergent success since their marriage.

Cruise is currently starring in the musical comedy "Rock of Ages," and has two major movies slated for release in the next 12 months: "Jack Reacher" and "Oblivion." Holmes' career never seemed to take off, despite her association with the A-list star and her role as Bruce Wayne's love interest in "Batman Returns" — she was replaced in "The Dark Knight" by Maggie Gyllenhaal.

She recently starred in the Reelz mini-series, "The Kennedys" as former First Lady Jackie Kennedy.

According to various sources, Holmes is believed to have a net worth of about $25 million, while Cruise's net worth is believed to more than ten times that figure at $270 million.

Tabloid papers and gossip sites have continually questioned the legitimacy of the couple's relationship.

Cruise has been married three times. He wed actress Mimi Rogers in 1987, and the couple divorced in 1990. His second marriage, to Nicole Kidman — whom he met on the set of the film "Days of Thunder" — lasted from 1990 to 2001. Cruise and Kidman adopted two children, Isabella and Connor.

Cruise was also romantically linked to his "Vanilla Sky" co-star Penelope Cruz prior to marrying Holmes.

Cruise sang Holmes' praises in the June issue of Playboy, characterizing her as "funny and charming," adding, "What we have together is very special.

"[Katie is] funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better. I'm a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that. I don't know what to say — I'm just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special."
