“Dark Knight Rises” was the top moneymaker at the foreign box office for the fifth consecutive weekend. It took in $21.4 million and in the process passed the overall overseas gross of its predecessor, “The Dark Knight.”
The final chapter in director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy has now taken in $488.6 million abroad, surpassing the $469.7 million for “Dark Knight.” The overall worldwide gross stands at $897.7 million, and it will almost surely be the first Batman movie to make more money abroad than in the U.S.

In 61 markets, “Dark Knight Rises” fell off 41 percent from last week. A $2.2 million weekend in the U.K. upped the overall gross there to $77 million. Elsewhere, it’s taken in $40.8 million from Korea, $40.5 million from Australia, $29 million in Germany, $28.7 million from Mexico and $27.7 million from France. It has yet to open in China.
There were several films grouped at the top of the foreign box office chart this week.
Sony’s “Total Recall” was the No. 2 money earner with $19 million from 54 markets, raising its overall foreign gross to $58.2 million and its worldwide total to $109.9 million.
Universal’s “Bourne Legacy” was just behind it with $18.2 million from just 19 territories.
“The Expendables” wasn’t far back, with $17.2 million from 10 regions.
Disney and Pixar’s “Brave” became the 11th Pixar film to top the $400 million worldwide mark. It stands at $408.3 million after adding $14.4 million from 47 markets over the weekend.
