Amazon’s Kindle Fire Sells Out Days Before Big Press Conference

Amazon is expected to unveil a new version of the Kindle Fire — or perhaps a phone or gaming console — at its press conference in Santa Monica next Wednesday

Amazon's Kindle Fire has sold out, the e-retail giant announced Thursday, as speculation swirls over a secretive Santa Monica press conference scheduled for Sept. 6.

The Fire entered the tablet market — of which it now claims 22 percent — nine months ago.

"We're grateful to the millions of customers who have made Kindle Fire the most successful product launch in the history of Amazon," CEO and founder Jeff Bezos said in a statement. "Kindle Fire is sold out, but we have an exciting roadmap ahead — we will continue to offer our customers the best hardware, the best prices, the best customer service, the best cross-platform interoperability and the best content ecosystem."

On the hardware side, media watchers have speculated that next week Amazon will introduce seven-inch and 10-inch Kindle Fires, a backlit e-reader and perhaps a gaming console or even a phone.

Bloomberg reported last month that Foxconn, the Chinese manufacturer that builds iPhones and iPads, is producing an Amazon phone to rival the iPhone and Android devices.

Only a year ago, Bezos took the stage in New York to introduce an array of devices, including the $99 Kindle Touch ($50 more for a 3G version), a Kindle Fire for $199 and a simple e-reader for $79.
