Russell Simmons Honored With Producers Guild of America’s 2013 Visionary Award

Russell Simmons will receive the award next month at the Beverly Hilton Hotel

Russell Simmons was named winner of the Producers Guild of America's 2013 Visionary Award, the group announced Thursday.

Simmons, a filmmaker and hip-hop producer, will receive the prize at the 24th Annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony on Jan. 25 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

“Throughout his career, Russell has accomplished the kinds of things that only a true visionary can,” Michael DeLuca, the chairman of the 2013 award jury, said in a statement. “He has seamlessly bridged the worlds of hip-hop music and filmed entertainment through poetry, comedy and music, offering viewers and music fans alike not just a reflection of themselves, but a hopeful glimpse of a world filled with art, joy and compassion.”

Simmons, who created Def Jam Recordings in 1984, has been a best-selling author since the publication of his New York Times list-topping "Do You! 12 Laws to Access the Power in you to Achieve Happiness and Success" in 2007. He has also been named among the most influential people in Hollywood by USA Today and Forbes Magazine.

"I'm sincerely humbled that the PGA chose me to receive a Visionary Award," Simmons said in a statement. "Just to be in the room with all those in the industry is a blessing."
