Cuba Gooding Jr., Vanessa Williams Join Cicely Tyson in ‘The Trip to Bountiful’

Broadway revival of "The Trip to Bountiful" will open next spring

Cuba Gooding Jr. and Vanessa Williams will join Cicely Tyson in the upcoming Broadway revival of "The Trip to Bountiful," the play's producers said Thursday.

Getty ImagesGooding will be making his Broadway — and stage — debut in the play. Best-known for his "Show Me the Money" role in "Jerry Maguire," the actor will play Tyson's over-protective son. Williams of "Desperate Housewives" and "Ugly Betty" fame, will play her controlling daughter-in-law. Williams made her Broadway debut in 1994 in "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and also appeared in Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" in 2002.

Rounding out the cast will be Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad, who was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in the Alicia Keys-produced production of "Stick Fly" on Broadway last year. Producers did not say what role she will be playing.

The Horton Foote play was made into an Oscar-winning film starring Geraldine Page, but the big attraction will Tyson, who will return to Broadway for the first time in 30 years. She last appeared in the Great White Way for a 1983 revival of "The Corn is Green."

"The Trip to Bountiful" centers on  an elderly woman who dreams of returning to her small hometown of Bountiful, Texas one last time and her struggles to get there against the wishes of her family.

Michael Wilson will direct the play, which will have a 14-week limited engagement beginning with previews on March 31, 2013 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
