SXSW Shorts, Midnight Lineup: Vampires, Sex Trafficking and Auschwitz

SXSW will screen 106 shorts and nine midnight movies during its March film festival

The South by Southwest Film Festival unveiled its midnight movie and short-film lineup on Wednesday, mixing features from horror mastermind Adam Wingard with shorts about robots and pig farmers.

Wingard, one of the directors of horror hit “V/H/S,” has two films in the midnighters section — “V/H/S 2,” on which he is one of several directors, and “You’re Next,” a home-invasion horror flick. Other films include “Kiss of the Damned,” the directorial debut of Xan Cassavetes, daughter of John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands, and “The Lords of Salem” from musician-turned-director Rob Zombie.

The shorts section includes narrative, documentary, animated and midnight categories, as well as shorts from Texas high-school students. There are 106 in all. The winner of the Grand Jury Prize in both narrative and animated will be eligible for an Oscar nomination in those two categories.

The South by Southwest film festival takes place at the same time as the music festival in Austin, and the film side always works music into its lineup. On top of its music-themed film section, the festival also screens a series of music videos as part of its shorts lineup.

This year’s crop includes Daniel Garcia and Harry Teitelman’s video for “Reagan,” a song by Atlanta rapper Killer Mike, and a DANIELS video for “Houdini,” the sixth single from Foster the People’s debut album “Torches.”

Here’s the full list of selections:
