‘Skyfall,’ ‘Life of Pi’ Are Tops with Motion Picture Sound Editors

"Life of Pi" wins two awards, but "Skyfall" takes the honor that most closely corresponds with the Oscar sound-editing category

On a night when director Ang Lee was honored with the Motion Picture Sound Editors' honorary Filmmaker Award, his film "Life of Pi" won big at the MPSE's Golden Reel Awards.

Life of PiBut the award that most closely aligns with the Oscar sound editing category, Sound Effects and Foley in a Feature Film category, went not to "Pi" but to the James Bond film "Skyfall."

Four of the five Oscar nominees were also nominated in that category: "Skyfall," "Pi," "Django Unchained" and "Argo." The last of those films suffered a rare shutout at an awards ceremony.

"Life of Pi" was the only film to win more than one award, taking home the Music in a Feature Film and Dialogue and ADR in a Feature Film categories, in addition to Lee's honorary award.

The awards took place one day after the Cinema Audio Society gave its top sound-mixing award to "Les Miserables." That film won the Golden Reel award for editing music in a musical feature.

In the animation category, "Wreck-It Ralph" ended a series of guild wins by "Brave" by taking home the top prize. "Last Call at the Oasis" won the award for sound editing in a documentary, while "Rust and Bone" won among foreign-language films.

"Game of Thrones" was the only television show to win more than one award, taking home a pair (one in a tie). Other TV awards went to "The Newsroom," "Smash," "American Horror Story" and "Fringe."

John Roesch, whose career includes "The Dark Knight," "Inception" and all three "Matrix" movies, received the MPSE's Career Achievement Award.

The ceremony took place at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in downtown Los Angeles.
