Script problems initially delayed the film, a sci-fi thriller starring Johnny Depp as a scientist. Yet those issues now appear to be resolved given the release date and because UTA, Depp’s agency, announced this week that he would star in this film before his other commitments. The film should enter production next month.

It is the only film currently scheduled for the weekend of April 25, opening a week before "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and two weeks after "Rio 2," "Stretch Armstrong" and the private eye film "The Equalizer."

Pfister has worked on every Christopher Nolan film since “Memento,” Nolan’s second full-length feature and the first one to earn him an Oscar nomination (for his screenplay). “Transcendence” will shoot in Los Angeles and has two other leads yet to be cast.

Alcon Entertainment and Straight Up Films are producing the project, the details of which have been shrouded in secrecy. TheWrap obtained a script summary in December revealing that the plot involves a scientist (Depp) whose brain is uploaded to a supercomputer to create a machine that can think for itself.
