James Gandolfini’s Death Spikes ‘Sopranos’ Sales on iTunes, Amazon

"The Sopranos" DVDs and instant videos experience a significant sales uptick as outpourings of grief and support flood the web

Following the tragic death of beloved actor James Gandolfini, fans of "The Sopranos" are showing their support online in the form of DVD and instant video purchases. Related search terms are also way up as a result.

"The Sopranos" Season 1 is currently sitting at No. 2 on the iTunes "Top TV Seasons" chart, only trailing "Futurama's" 10th and final season. iTunes would not comment on specific sales data, as those figures would be in HBO's realm. HBO declined comment to TheWrap.

On Amazon, "The Sopranos: The Complete Series" jumped into and way up the top 100, all the way to No. 2 on the "Best Sellers in Movies & TV" list. The series' DVD retails for $124.99 on the online retail giant's website. It is only behind "Mad Men" episode "The Quality of Mercy," which is an Amazon Instant Video. That fact — obviously — makes "The Sopranos: The Complete Series" the site's highest-ranking movie or TV series or DVD.

The first season of the HBO series on DVD — which sells for $20.49 — moved up to number 31. Season 6 (the mob crime drama's final one) is up to number 49.

Outside of the Top 50 (but inside the Top 100) is "The Sopranos" pilot sales via instant video, which entered the top 100 at number 61. The first half of Season 6 on DVD is up to number 63. The complete second season is up to number 73, the complete fifth season reached 80.
