After having its release delayed, Miramax's "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," will see the light.
FilmDistrict announced late Sunday that it has acquired all U.S. rights to director Troy Nixey's take on the 1973 horror movie and that a wide release is scheduled for Aug. 12.
The movie's release was delayed by Walt Disney Studios' sale of Miramax. Another film, "The Debt," also had its release delayed. Last week, Focus Features announced it will release "The Debt" this summer.
"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" is produced by Guillermo Del Toro and Mark Johnson, and stars Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison and Jack Thompson. It is Nixey's directorial debut. Del Toro and Matthew Robbins co-wrote the movie about a young girl who starts hearing voices after moving to her father and his new girlfriend's 19th-century mansion. When she opens a bolted ash pit, she releases an evil force.
“Nixey made a very impressive first film and we are thrilled to be working with Guillermo and Mark Johnson,” Peter Schlessel, CEO of FilmDistrict, said in a written statement.
In January, Pathe International announced it would release the movie outside North America.
