AFTRA Supports Fledgling Composers Union

Along with the American Federation of Musicians, org sends letter to Teamsters endorsing the formation of new labor group

AFTRA and the American Federation of Musicians today sent a joint letter to the Teamsters, endorsing the ongoing effort by film and TV composers and lyricists to unionize.

“We support efforts to assist composers and lyricists to organize through the Teamsters and your efforts to be recognized by the employers’ association,” read a letter addressed to Teamsters business agent Steve Dayan from American Federation of Television and Radio Artists national executive director Kim Roberts Hedgpeth and AFM president Thomas Lee.

With wages for composers and lyricist declining dramatically over the last three decades, efforts are currently underway to coalesce the loose-knit industry into a union called the Association of Media Composers and Lyricists.
