Italy's highest court ordered a retrial for Amanda Knox and an ex-boyfriend in the 2007 murder of Knox's roommate.
The 25-year-old Knox, an obsession of an international tabloid press that has dubbed her "Foxy Knoxy," was convicted with Raffaele Sollecito in the murder of Meredith Kercher, 21, when the women were students in Perugia, Italy.
Knox and Sollecito were accused of killing the British Kercher in a drug-fuelled sexual assault. They were convicted and sentenced to 25 years for Knox and 26 for Sollecito. But they were released in 2011 after their attorneys challenged evidence in the case, and Knox returned to the U.S.
She was the subject of a Lifetime movie with Hayden Panatierre, and is scheduled to release a memoir and give her first interview about the case — to ABC News' Diane Sawyer — on April 30.
But on Tuesday, Italy's Court of Cassation overturned the acquittal, accepting a request from prosecutors and Kercher family lawyers for a retrial, Reuters reported. The retrial will be held in Florence.
Knox's lawyer said it was unclear if she would return to Italy to face the charges. It was also unclear if the U.S. would extradite her.
Kercher's body, with more than 40 wounds and a deep gash in the throat, was found in her and Knox's partment, Reuters reported. The only person serving time in the murder is Ivorian Rudy Guede, who was sentence to 16 years. But prosecutors say he could not have killed Kercher alone.
