‘American Sniper,’ ‘Unbroken’ Among Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Winners (Complete List)

Other awards go to “Birdman,” “Get On Up,” “Big Hero 6,” “Game of Thrones” and “The Newsroom”

“American Sniper,” “Unbroken,” “Birdman” and “Get On Up” won awards on Sunday night at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, the top honors given out by sound editors.

“American Sniper” won for its sound effects and Foley, the category that most closely corresponds to the Oscar category for sound editing. Four of the five Oscar sound-editing nominees were among the eight MPSE nominees in that category.

“Unbroken” won for dialogue and ADR and “Birdman” won for music, while “Get On Up” was judged to have the best sound work of any feature musical.

Other feature-film awards went to “Big Hero 6” for animated film, “The Liberator” for foreign film and “Warsaw Uprising” for documentary.

In the television categories, wins went to “Game of Thrones,” “The Newsroom,” “Almost Human,” “Fargo,” “Houdini,” “Klondike,” “Star Wars: Rebels,” “Foo Fighters Sonic Highways” and “Ax Men.”

The MPSE honors sound editing in seven different feature-film categories, as well as eight television categories and additional categories for webisodes, games and direct-to-video entertainment.

On Saturday, the Cinema Audio Society, the organization of sound professionals that honors sound mixing, gave its top award to “Birdman.” Unlike the MPSE, the CAS only picks a single feature-film winner.

The ceremony was held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites in downtown Los Angeles.
