Amy Winehouse’s Father Speculates on Cause of Death on ‘Anderson’

In Cooper’s first episode, family talks about meeting mourners

Amy Winehouse may have died from a seizure caused by detoxing from drinking, her father said on the first episode of "Anderson," premiering today.

Mitch Winehouse, in the first sitdown with the singer's family, said his daughter had not taken drugs for years and was taking medication to avoid seizures from alcohol withdrawal.

"It might be that drugs took its toll in the early years, but there were no drugs in her system," he told Cooper. "She was prescribed Liprium, which is a normal drug, which is given to people who are detoxing and it kind of decreases the chances of having seizures. She was continuing to take one of those pill everyday."

He added: "She had a series of seizures brought on by this binge drinking and then stopping to drink… I think it's what the doctor said, I think she had a seizure and this was the time when there was no one there to rescue her."

The interview also includes Mitch Winehouse and the singer's mother, Janis Winehouse, describing their visit to their daughter's home soon after she died, and the support from mourners outside.

Mitch Winehouse also spoke about the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which he said will benefit children and horses — he said his daughter loved both — as well as those struggling with addiction.
