Andrew McCarthy Turns Down Matthew Broderick’s ‘Ladyhawke’ Role in Funny or Die Spoof (Video)

The actor really, really doesn't want to star in the 1985 fantasy film

Andrew McCarthy, the '80s Brat Pack star most famous for roles in "St. Elmo's Fire," "Pretty in Pink" and "Weekend at Bernies," was close to starring opposite Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer in 1985 box office bomb "Ladyhawke," according to a new Funny or Die video.

In the fifth release from the "Warren Klein Voicemail Archive" — a collection of conversations between actors and Klein, a fictional power agent who was at the height of his career in the '80s — Klein desperately tries to convince McCarthy to accept the role of Phillipe Gaston, which Matthew Broderick ended up securing.

"Andy, it is Warren. Again. I do need an answer on 'Ladyhawke' right now. This is what we have been waiting for, pal," Klein says. "Rutger turns into a wolf by night, Michelle turns into a hawk by day, and you turn into an above-the-title movie star by October."

"Let me remind you of a conversation we just had at Mark Harmon's rainforest gala," McCarthy shoots back after picking up the phone during the voicemail. "I don't want to do a picture about 12th century Italy. I want to tell stories about the times we live in."

What ensues is enormously entertaining banter full of references from a decade McCarthy ruled on the big screen. These days, McCarthy is still acting, but has also turned his attention toward directing. His recent credits include six episodes of the CW's "Gossip Girl" and three episodes of Netflix's "Orange Is the New Black."
