Angelina Jolie Joins Stars Speaking Out Against Nigerian School Girl Kidnappings (Video)

The special envoy to the U.S. addressed the abductions while on a publicity tour for “Maleficent” in France

Angelina Jolie has joined the growing number of Hollywood stars who have spoken out against the recent kidnappings of hundreds of schoolgirls in Nigeria.

Islamic extremist group Boko Haram has admitted to abducting over 200 Nigerian schoolgirls several weeks ago and is threatening to sell them because of their Western education.

Jolie, who is doing press for “Maleficent” in Europe, told French news channel i-Tele that she was “absolutely sickened” by the abductions and urged immediate action to find the girls.

“The thought of them out there right now, terrified and being abused and sold…it’s infuriating,” said Jolie, a special envoy to the U.N.

“If the world does nothing and they get away with this then we set this horrible precedent, so I think it’s extremely important that something is done immediately to try to find these girls,” said Jolie.

She also lamented the kidnapping and “unthinkable cruelty and evil” in the world during a press conference for “Maleficent” on Tuesday.

Around the internet, other celebrities have taken to Twitter to voice their concern for the girls, including Jessica Biel, Whoopi Goldberg and Forest Whitaker. Biel posted an image on Instagram with the hashtag, #BringBackOurGirls. That hashtag has been one of Twitter’s top trending topics for several days.

“Fear of education 4 girls in any country condemns the future of that country. WHY HURT YOUR OWN FUTURE,” Whoopi Goldberg wrote on Twitter.

Actor Ian Somerhalder echoed Whoopi’s sentiments, tweeting, “Empowering our youth through education is the TRUE key to hope-let’s use our voices,innovation&collective power to #BringBackOurGirls NOW!!!”
