Anne Hathaway is in negotiations to star in Sony’s upcoming “Barbie” film with Alethea Jones in talks to direct, TheWrap has learned.

Based on the famous doll line, the film is currently slated for a June 29, 2018, release and is produced by Amy Pascal, Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. Richard Dickson, president and COO of Mattel, is executive producing the movie.

Kim Caramele and Diablo Cody share writing credit on the screenplay, and Jones is considered the frontrunner to direct. Amy Schumer was previously attached to the project, but later dropped out.

Hathaway, who won an Oscar in 2013 for “Les Miserables,” most recently appeared in the Neon sci-fi film “Colossal.” She will next appear in Warner Bros.’ “Ocean’s Eight,” which is slated for a June 8, 2018 release.

Jones’ next film, the indie comedy “Fun Mom Dinner,” will be released August 4 from Momentum Pictures.
