"The Artist," "Hugo" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" are among the movies in the running for the top prizes from the Art Directors Guild, which announced its nominations on Tuesday night.
But those film are only a few from a plethora of nominees. The ADG separates its movie awards into three different categories — Period Film, Fantasy Film and Contemporary Film — which allows it to salute a broad range of films, from likely Oscar nominees to real longshots.
Typically, Oscar voters make most of their picks from the ADG's period category.
In that category, the ADG contenders are "The Artist," "Hugo," "The Help," "Anonymous" and "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy."
One surprising omission from the category: Steven Spielberg's "War Horse," which seemed a likelier choice than "Anonymous" or "The Help."
In the Fantasy Film category, "Harry Potter" is going up against "Captain America: The First Avenger," "The Adventures of Tintin," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and "Cowboys & Aliens."
The unexpected guild and critics favorite "Bridesmaids" will compete in the Contemporary Film category against "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," "The Descendants," "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" and "Drive."
Television nominations went to many of the usual suspects ("Boardwalk Empire," "Game of Thrones," "Mildred Pierce," "Cinema Verite," "Modern Family" and "30 Rock") as well as to "Pan Am," "The Playboy Club," "American Horror Story" and "Bling Ring."
