Exclusive: Baron Cohen's 'Bruno' Slapped With NC-17

Gay sex in the hot tub with a baby? The new docu-comedy has sex scenes that the ratings board considers over the line

The audience, exclusively African-Americans, gave him an earful, revealing distaste for same-sex parenting that many Americans comfortably express.

Baron Cohen pushed the audience, saying: “The baby has a traditional African name -- O.J." Then, he pushed them further through a series of explicit photographs showing Bruno with other men in various stages of undress while the baby sits nearby. He added: “He's a real dick magnet."

Baron Cohen has butted heads with the MPAA before. “Borat” was given an NC-17 on its first go-round, and still ended up with a hilarious, outrageous scene in which he wrestled naked with his obese driver, ending up with his face in the man’s genitals and anus.

Apparently “Bruno” is even more outrageous than that. “He offends everybody,” said one executive. “But you laugh from the minute it starts. A guy like Sacha shoots what he wants, and then he negotiates.”

Another scene shows Bruno buying an African-American baby in order to become famous. The baby arrives in a cardboard box on the luggage carousel at an airport.

“Sacha is always redrawing the boundaries where you don’t expect them,” said one person close to the film. The humor, said this person, is meant to make viewers feel uncomfortable about their preconceived stereotypes, particularly as regards homosexuality and racism.

“It forces us to question our own discomfort when we are confronted with images that challenge our preconceptions about sexuality,” said this person, who declined to be identified.

The spokesman said that Baron Cohen had shot a lot of material, and would be able to cut it without a problem. “With the quantity of material available, I cannot foresee a problem,” said the spokesman. “It's not even April and the film comes out July 10 so it's nonsense to say there's a struggle of any kind."

And the NC17 material?  It will likely be used on a red-band, sealed DVD, to be released down the line.

The NC-17 was implemented to get rid of the negative connotations the X rating had, but it's turned into the no-man's land of studio movies. It's a real shame that in America, films for adults that aren't pornography are stigmatized the same as if they were. Not even mentioning the MPAA's extreme lenience on violence and hardness on sex and nudity, particularly when gay characters are involved, the ratings system is supposed to be a guide for PARENTS, but what it ends up doing is ruining movies for the rest of us. They present the system as an alternative to censorship, but it's the same thing because most theaters won't play movies with an NC-17 on best web hosting
site, you can't run an ad in a paper or on TV, so it's financial death. As far as a guide for parents, the MPAA ratings are vague or confusing ("A bizzare/fantasy/comic violent image, Smoking, Breif Drug Use - All Involving Teens") that they're not nearly as good a guide for parents as so mant other websites are, where parents can go, see that maybe The Dark Knight isn't a good choice for their 12 year old because of such and such scenes. Also Borat was hetereosexual, so I guess an R rating was fine when he had balls on his chin in close up, and I can only assume the sex in Bruno is simulated, and how many times have we seen simulated sex between a man and a woman in an R movie? Countless times, but when it's two men, suddenly it should be relegated to the indepdent theaters and video stores.

I have no problems with the concept of rating films as a guideline for viewers. However, the MPAA makes it so arbitrary that you really have no idea what to expect.

Some people need to relax. I'm sure that a lot of people complaining about too much penis in movies, (Please let me know where 'cause there aint enough penis in the movie I see in my hood) aren't complaining about all the blood and guts violence that is being shown in movies.

Are female genitals shown in bruno? and if so, to what extent.
i wanna watch the movie but im not eager if theres a lot of nudity...

a wonderful man you!

How come the MPAA allows penises to be shown in R-rated movies, but not vaginas? Why is it okay to show the entire male genitalia (including scrotum and penis) but its not okay to show the entire female genitalia (labia and clitoris)? The most the MPAA allows to be shown of women is just pubic hair, but they will allow a man's entire penis to be shown in graphic, close-up detail. They even allow a man's pee-hole to be shown "talking" in Bruno, but would they ever allow a close-up view of a woman's pee-hole? Why is there such an unfair, sexist double-standard. How come the male genitals can be shown but not female genitals? If I was a filmaker I would put a scene in my movie clearly showing a woman's labia, and then when the MPAA tried to give me an NC-17 rating I would SUE THE MPAA for having a sexually discriminatory rating policy regarding genital nudity!

Hollywood would be nothing without some porn scenes in their movies. Imagine what would happen if all the movies that show some skin get rated as adult movies...

Is there any labia in the movie - or is that considered auotmatic porn and requires an nc17. The MPAA is all jacked up isn't it? Btw-whoever said male nudity automatically gives it an nc17 hasn't seen watchmen or observe and report-is there an R rated mainstreem comedy showing 2+ minutes of vagina. That is the next taboo that Hollywood needs to do to shock people. Oh but that is right, shooting a pregnant mom as was done in watchmen is less offensive and does less damage to society then showing some labia. I really hope they add some balance to this borat as dick is becoming a little overdone.

Hey Ziggy,

fyi the story cindy is referring to from the nyt, in sept 2006:

Equal-Opportunity Offender Plays Anti-Semitism For Laughs

Censorship is so backwards anymore. They don't even know what to censor, and half the time people are brow-beating based on preconceived notions, not what they're actually seeing.

Case in point: An independent feature called InSearchOf was recently shot in my hometown. I went to the premiere they had here. The film was unrated. The filmmakers said it just costs WAY too much money to run anything by the MPAA, and having shot on film, they had spent WAY too much money already.

So the theater where they were holding the premiere tacks up this sign over their movie poster saying, "No one permitted under the age of 18." Wouldn't that make it a porno? I saw the film. There isn't a single sex scene in the thing. Sure there's nudity because it's a film about sex, but not ONE SINGLE SEX SCENE. And here's the best part...the director said in an interview that the theater hadn't even watched the movie when they tagged it with an X-rating.

For anyone interested, the movie and trailer are at:
http://store.idreammachine.com/299kkapet

I find it interesting that the ratings bored will let through the most incredibly graphic violence but throw some male nudity in there and suddenly the film gets an NC-17. Apparently they assume that all kids will commit murders but never take their clothing off.

Hey "Ziggy",
It's always funny when racist dirtbags call someone "human garbage." Takes one to know one.
Lard

Any filmmaker who wants to "redraw the boundaries" knows what to expect from the MPAA. Trey Parker and Matt Stone wrote the book on this. Just pack your first cut with hideously obscene junk you have no intention of including, get your "NC-17," then start trimming a little here and a little there, back and forth and back and forth until the MPAA finally relents and gives you an "R." By then, you've got the film you wanted to release in the first place, and it's still way beyond what would have received an "R" if you'd given it the MPAA first thing.

The MPAA has way too much power for an organization with no written standards and no regulation. And as long as slapping a film with an "NC-17" is the same as a death sentence, I think we can make the case that this is de facto censorship. This system really needs to change; it's time.

SBC is jewish and he will have his way with any HOLLYWOOD ratings system because he is jewish. That is a given for, decades now.
The guy is human garbage and if you don't see that then you are degrading your own character.

"Cohen is currently appealing the decision while simultaneously struggling with cutting the film to suit the ratings board. But the ratings board, a secret panel of parents appointed by the studio-owned movie association, is notoriously inexact about what it requires to move from an NC-17 to an R."

The MPAA is the problem here.

If the MPAA doesn't have an issue with the scene, isn't that a further clue that your 3rd-hand source's description of the scene is likely inaccurate?

Thanks for responding. I like your column, generally. I just can't understand why you would want to insinuate that scene has anything to do with sex and a baby.

I just Googled you plus Sacha Baron Cohen and noticed you said in an early article that Borat was anti-semitic, when it was clearly anti-anti-semitic. Sure there's no agenda?

Thanks Cindy, we have no beef. But we have not seen the film. And you've only seen one version of it, remember. There are at least two versions currently cut, neither of them final. We did check with Universal before publication, and they did not flag that description as inaccurate. They called shortly after we published (minutes ago) to say that the hot tub scene is not on the list that the MPAA finds objectionable, so we've taken it out.

Your column it beyond inaccurate. I saw BRUNO Wednesday night in Marina Del Rey at a preview. I saw the hot tub scene. There are men splashing around and there's a baby, but there is ZERO sex going on in that scene.

Why wouldn't you get your facts straight before saying something so damaging to a film that is flat out the funniest most satirical most important film about racism and prejudice (and homophobia) we've seen since, well... Borat?

What's your beef? Why not get your story right?
