Hollywood and European cultural figures reacted in shock and anger to the news that Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski, 76, had been arrested in Switzerland on a 31-year-old U.S. warrant for charges that he had sex with a minor.

“L.A. Prosecutors Set Trap for Polanski,” read the headline on Variety.com.

In Paris, Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand said he was "dumbfounded" by Polanski's arrest, according to the Associated Press. He added that he "strongly regrets that a new ordeal is being inflicted on someone who has already experienced so many of them."

In public and private statements, prominent figures in the movie and cultural world expressed amazement that Los Angeles authorities would persist in pursuing the director at this late date, despite evidence of judicial misconduct in his case and the lack of support for a case from the victim, now a grown woman.

“I am both surprised and concerned,” said Mark Urman of Paladin Films, who has worked with Polanski for decades, echoing sentiments expressed by many on the eve of the Jewish holiday of atonement.

“I find the whole thing sad all around,” wrote producer Mike Medavoy by email. Referring to the hunted protagonist in ‘Les Miserables,’ Medavoy added: “While it isn’t exactly Jean Valjean, the original story -- going back to Roman in Poland, the murder of his pregnant wife, and the strange mother-daughter story, the judge -- I think they should drop the charges and he should come and end all of this.”

But L.A. authorities said that if extradited, Polanski would be sentenced at the hearing he avoided by fleeing the country three decades ago.

“It’s appalling,” said French producer Stephane Sperry, who has worked with Polanski. “Roman is 76. And he’s a genius of our generation. It’s amazing to see something come back into the world we’re in with that kind of brutality. We don’t understand where it’s coming from. “

Sperry said French people saw the entire affair as part of the “misfunction” of the American judicial system. “It’s not normal. It’s very disturbing – a bit of a scandal.”

Others said they hoped that this arrest might finally lead to resolution of Polanski’s case.

Said Urman: “I can only hope that, now that this has occurred, it will lead to a swift and definitive resolution of his situation vis-a-vis the U.S. authorities. I have long felt that, were his case dealt with officially, it would be settled in his favor. Maybe this will finally happen.”

Polanski, 76, had been due to receive a prize for his life's work at the Zurich Film Festival on Sunday evening, opening a retrospective of his film career, but was arrested on arrival at Zurich airport on Saturday night.

Calling Polanski, who won the director Oscar for "The Pianist" in 2003, one of the greatest film directors of our time, the Zurich festival directors said they had "received this news with great consternation and shock."

Said Medavoy: “He needs to be able to live a normal life without feeling this shadow over his head.

Many want to wrap themselves in the sexual details wallowing in Roman Polanski’s alleged crime which occurred 3 decades ago

People disregard the Judicial Misconduct and the victimization of Roman Polanski, that occurred after, by either paying no attention to it, or alternatively condoning the Santa Monica Judge’s wish to illegally punish Roman Polanski nearly 32 years ago.

If you care about justice and just punishment– then a person should not be illegally punished, which is what Roman Polanski faced in the Santa Monica Courthouse 32 years ago.

Roman Polanski’s legacy will be -

That he made great movies

That he survived Hitler’s Holocaust as a child,

That Roman Polanski survived the Manson and Susan Atkin's killings of his beautiful American wife and child,

And then after all that - Roman Polanski managed to make another great movie called China Town, and after making that movie about injustice in Los Angeles he did not give in to INJUSTICE and the politics of China Town in his own life -

THE INHERENT INJUSTICE CONTAINED IN CALIFORNIA'S SANTA MONICA COURTHOUSE.

Also to be thanked is Marina Zenovich who expertly made the movie Polanski: Wanted and Desired, which documents the Injustice of the Santa Monica Courthouse and makes it quite VISIBLE.

This is a wonderful public service because it helps Roman Polanski’s case and in addition it helps others because this is not the only instance of INJUSTICE at SANTA MONICA COURTHOUSE - INVOLVING STAGED HEARINGS WHICH LINGER ON FOR YEARS.

The fact that there is injustice in Santa Monica Courthouse is why the litigation lingers on for years.

ROMAN POLANSKI'S LEGACY WILL BE THAT HE STOOD UP TO INJUSTICE AT SANTA MONICA COURTHOUSE AND BY FLYING AWAY FROM INJUSTICE - ULTIMATELY HE (& MARINA ZENOVICH) TURNED THE SPOTLIGHT ON TO THE INJUSTICE - BY MAKING IT VISIBLE FOR THE WORLD TO SEE

It's sad and discouraging to see artists of the caliber on the petition to free Polanski and defending an act that was not only criminal but heinous.
As a pedophile, Polanski deserves to be brought to justice, regardless of elapsed time. He fled that justice and has been enjoying his privileged life ever since.
Being an "artist" doesn't exempt one from the consequences of your actions. The self-serving, narcissistic nature of those petitioners and other Polanski defenders gives further ammunition to those who think "Hollywood" is a synonym for "cesspool." The women signators in particular should be ashamed. The men are morally bankrupt on this issue and a disgrace.

I used to scoff when demagogic worshipers of "middle America" would deplore Hollywood's amoral values system. Sure, Hollywood is liberal--but this is effing craziness.

It amazes me that everyone in Hollywood is so surprised. It seems common sense that if you flee the country, especially if you are famous, you will, in the end, probably get caught. http://www.newsy.com/videos/polanski_s_31_year_old_problem

Mea culpa.

Larry Lydecker, so you have reveal your full name online or you're a coward? What does it matter what this guy calls himself? Don't his words matter more?

And I noticed that you didn't address the content of his comment, you went strait for the personal attacks. Nice. Very brave.

Anyway, I've yet to hear a logical argument for the release of Polanski.

It was the judge's prerogative to dismiss the plea bargain because judges aren't bound by agreements made between the defense and prosecutors. In the event a judge opts not to accept a plea bargain the accused has the right to take back his guilty plea and proceed with trial, or the plea can be augmented to satisfy the judge. Polanski would have known that his plea bargain wasn't a guarantee and that he would have had other options.

However, Polanski fled before hearing the judge's ruling and weighing his options. He is the one responsible for his present situation no matter how many morons want to shift blame or make accuses because of his "genius" or his past.

And despite the fact that many people believe he deserves special treatment, our justice system doesn't allow prisoners to run the prisons or defendants to have the final say over punishments.

french people are so stupid!

Polanski DRUGGED, RAPED and SODOMIZED a CHILD and got away with it by leaving our country, intentionally avoiding entering the US for 32 years to keep from being convicted. What does this town of delusional narcissists with a grandiose sense of entitlement "NOT GET" about this RAPE case? Psst, here guys...it's very simple ...Any other rapist would have gone to prison for sodomizing a CHILD...but because he's "ROMAN POLANSKI"?...you put him on a pedestal and worship him because he can make a "good movie". Aw gee, could you reveal the shallowness of your souls any better? WE'RE TALKING ABOUT RAPING AND SODOMIZING A CHILD HERE! What if it were your kid? So Polanski can make a "decent film"...BIG F*****G DEAL...the SOB is an admitted CHILD MOLESTER and belongs in prison.

It doesn't matter if it was 1977 or 2007 folks...in the victims mind the memory of the day he raped her will live on forever. Legally and chronologically speaking, a child is a child, RAPE is RAPE and the law is the law for a good reason...in this case the law is there to PROTECT CHILDREN from people like Duggard who raped and knocked up a 13 year old twice. Polanski was no different at the time. Hey, if you're wanna play...YA GOTTA PAY....certainly you're all not too full of yourselves to know the story...you also must know what they do to guys that are convicted of child molestation in prison...let's just say they are at the bottom of the food chain...let the son of a bitch finally feel what it's like to be "the bitch" and abused.

No, Ziggle is right!

Hollywood and France belong together. You can intoxicate and rape a 13 year old and because you're a "genius" you can be left alone and get away with it, even after you admit your guilt and then skip town. Whether or not the judge was a jerk, Roman STILL broke the law and did that to a young girl, and he deserved (still deserves) to pay for this crime, unless we all want to just say it's okay to do that to 13 year old girls, even 30 years later. Living free from responsibility in France all these years surely doesn't qualify as paying for this crime. And the French government should be ashamed of themselves. Oh that's right, they're too proud to feel shame...

I find it hilarious that all this occured on the very same weekend that everyone registered shock and horror that Michael Vick -- a man who who was tried, convicted, and fully served the sentence for his crime -- should be allowed to return to his old profession. The fact that Polanski had a hard life and made some great films doesn't mean he's allowed to drug and forcibly sodomize a child, then admit to it, then flee the country and live in luxury abroad for three decades, and then expect the legal system to believe he's "suffered enough" already.

I tend to make allowances for great artists in their personal lives, but this notion that Polanski's talent gives him the ability to rape a child with impunity is absurd.

If his had been some right wing conservative who had sex with a 13 year old, would Hwood be so forgiving? While I do think that the mother in this case was complicit, acting much like a pimp, I never ceased to be astonished at the hypocrisy of Hwood - what if this had been one of their daughters, would all of them say, "Yeah, I know he had sex with my underage daughter, but damn, have you seen Chinatown?" I'm a big fan of his artistically but his talent does not excuse his crime. Let him come to the states, get off with some slap on the hand and register as a sex offender - then we can all get on with more important things.

Given the present 'witch hunt' climate, Polanski would have been better off taking his licks many years ago. Perhaps there should be a new trial with Chris Hanson on the jury. That would be better than OJ's "The Trial of the Century!" Just what we need to distract us in this time of economic hardship--more bread and circuses.

Apparently, Polanski was ready to accept his sentence until the judge started playing games (reminds me of 'Turkish justice' in Midnight Express). Further, bringing up the case once again will be as painful to the victim as it will be for Polanski (according to her). Why not make his punishment that time already served AND permanent deportation from the US?

Either that, or we could return to the ago-old punishment of stoning. Put Polanski against a wall, and charge admission, providing attendees with one 'stone' apiece. Marbles could take the place of actual stones, so as to be painful, but not fatal.

Maybe Switzerland is doing this to distract us from its complicity in the banking scandal, whose banks protect the assets of countless criminals.

While not speaking to what happened in the Polanski case, things we found benign 40 years ago we now recognize to be completely unacceptable.

Speaking directly to the Polanski case, a plea deal was offered by the prosecution and accepted by the defense and Court, then the Judge pulled it off the table in what seems to be a violation of Judicial ethics. Under the made deal, Polanski would have been freed for time served, meaning that before he left for France he'd already served the time the prosecutors were asking for.

Today such a deal under the same set of circumstances would be unthinkable. And rightly so. But is it fair to judge anyone by today's mores for something that happened long ago?

How do you dare make an "impassioned plea" for justice -- protecting 13 year olds -- when you have to hide behind a putzy name like "Ziggle?" Anonymous posters are cowards.

It is amazing that the same Hollywood types who vocally advocate the prosecution of Nazi-era war criminals -- grave offenses even older that Polanski's crime -- are so quick to assert that Polanski should get a free ride after drugging and anally, orally, and vaginally raping a thirteen-year-old girl whom he later paid off. Maybe some of them ought to think about what it would feel like if their 13-year-old daughter was raped this way.

He may well be a great artiste, but he's also a rapist.
