N.Y. Film Critics Circle Unveiling its Picks on Dec. 14

The New York Film Critics Circle will vote on this year's best film on Dec. 14, the group said Tuesday.

The winners will be presented with their prizes at a banquet in New York on Jan. 11. 

 

The organization is composed of 31 critics from the state's publications and media outlets. It is celebrating its 75th anniversary through a series of special events slated over the next two months.

 

“Because our role as film critics is under attack as never before, from downsizing and competition from amateur media, it is important to acknowledge the New York Film Critics Circle as the country’s oldest and most prestigious film critics’ organization," said Armond White, chairman of the group and lead film critic of the New York Press.

 

On Oct. 10, the Hamptons International Film Festival will honor the Circle with a panel discussion on the state of film criticism.

 

That will be followed by a salute from the Brooklyn Academy of Music's film department, "BAM and the New York Film Circle Presents 1962," set for Oct. 23-Nov. 9. The film series focuses on the one year the Circle didn't present awards because of a newspaper strike.

 

Finally, this week, the Museum of Modern Art will conclude its series “Critical Favorites: The New York Film Critics Circle at 75” this week, with a reception on Thursday.
