Tension Beneath Tranquility -- TheWrap's Exclusive Tour of the Motion Picture Home

Walking along the home’s shaded paths, it’s easy to see why residents wish to remain here.

While the war of words over the imminent closure of the Motion Picture and Television Home hospital and long-term care center has been loud, messy and visceral, the grounds are nothing but tidy tranquility.

During an exclusive tour, an elderly resident zips around in her electric scooter-chair, and pauses to reflect on the controversy over the closure. “It’s sad,” she says. “It feels wrong.”

Officials from the MPTF opened the doors of the 48-acre facility for the first time last week to TheWrap, hoping to make clear why they find it necessary to close the hospital and long-term care faciility in a bid to preserve the MPTF's other activities.

Today the Wasserman Campus remains a quiet oasis of cottages, a hospital, lawns and pepper trees in Woodland Hills, and it's not hard to understand why its remaining residents and their families are fighting to stay. A stunt police car recently parked at the front entrance – and which some residents complained was meant to intimidate - has been removed.

Still, emotions are running high over the closure and many of Hollywood’s biggest names wait to see how this embarrassing chapter will end.

“No one with a connection to the home is happy with the decision (to close),” says Ken Scherer, CEO of the Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation, referring not only to the affected residents, but to the fund’s board and the Hollywood community that supports it. “The whole process has not been fun.”

Scherer seems pained in general -- and he admits that the police car was “not a good idea.” MPTF officials did not allow visiting Wrap journalists to speak to residents, who were notably few in number.  (Monday Update: an MPTF spokeswoman disputed that residents were barred from speaking to TheWrap; the strong impression left during the visit was otherwise. Photos of residents were explicitly banned, and no residents were present during the tour.)

The fund’s grounds reflect the dual personality of the campus. On one end of the property is the new, $18 million Saban Center for Health and Wellness, which opened in 2007 and features the Jodie Foster Aquatic Pavilion. The center, whose hallways are lined with photographs by Roddy McDowall and also boasts a state-of-the-art gym, a multipurpose room and administrative offices. Nearby stand the post-modern Fran and Ray Stark Villas.

At the other end of the grounds lie the home’s original studio and one-bedroom cottages, along with a residential lodge and Harry’s Haven, a 30-bed dementia unit.

The MPTF hospital, a portion of which opened as recently as 1989, connects to the Jack Skirball Health Center (whose outpatient services, along with Harry’s Haven, are not closing). The state of California has ordered MPTF to earthquake-retrofit. The fund says this would be prohibitively expensive, estimating it would cost about $15 million.

And Scherer says the fund is now losing $1 million a month with the underused hospital remaining open.

What will happen when it closes?

The fund hasn’t decided what to do with the building, he said, although he’s quick to deny that it will be turned into apartments or razed for a parking lot.

“That’s a decision,” he says as we walk down a hospital corridor, “that will take place after we close the facility, take a deep breath and sit down to talk about it.

What a load of B.S.!!! Tell that to the remaining residents, their families, and the employees expected to lose our jobs...

Beautification of the campus, restricting access down to one gate guarded by useless dumb-looking guards riding around in golf carts aimlessly, limiting residents activities because they decide to stay in their rooms and not have lunch or dinner in the downstairs' dining room, unit supplies no longer available-staff resorting to reusing coffee mugs with lids preventing spills in bed of that bed-bound resident with little to no range of motion to carry the cup to their mouths to quinch their thirst, high-priced construction trucks parked and ready for new modeling/building/repairing the grounds, limiting or ceasing funds that are to be spent on the residents for scooter repairs to promote independence or required tools to complete their activities of daily living (ADLs), paying clue-less social services workers to intimidate residents and families-assigning agendas in combined efforts of Susan Poppycock, Joan Carey, and Ellie Shaya of upper management (Nursing Dept.), not allowing any new admits, empty beds, consolidating units to save money better spent of growing trees and paving roads, pointless in room visits of make-believe in house Rabbi Arthur RosenFOOL, residents transfered out due to change of conditions fighting to come back home against S.S. and Nursing Dept., residents dying due to transfer trauma (although management can easily contribute their deaths to an age-related chronic illness), activity department aiding management in ridding the home of sick residents that have little to no family involvement disgusing themselves as 'friends'-(yes, LIZ SAMUELS, that would be you and we know it, TWO-FACED and YOU KNOW IT YOURSELF... rumor has it MPTF is sending you to school, maybe to renew you CNA certificate or to become a nurse, either way your presence is useless to them when you don't have THEIR BEST INTEREST AT HEART!!!), the lies to those in the villa-lodges-cottages of being safe and secure if only they are healthy, Ruth Gotleib dying after falling and injurying herself-keeping this a secret because she didn't want to lose her home, residents refusing to eat, residents losing hope and growing more frustrated with each day wondering if someone or something else will be taken away or withheld, less than independent residents transfered to the Alzhiemers unit or the villa, nursing supervisors called into the villa or lodge to disconnect a foley catheter leg bag to a drainage-overnight bag because staff is not allowed/permitted/taught how to do it (since those independent living units do not have a full time nurse but instead are staff with cheaper labor (resident care assistants or RCAs) they cannot but law disconnect a foley bag and to have one in the first place requires nursing-why is that resident not on a LTC unit or on Alzhiemers'?, other residents transfered out with a fair prognosis of surviving without 24Hour nursing care but were initially admiting to LTC with a POOR PROGNOSIS requiring total nursing care (money, Money, MONEY, secrets, and LIES!), Human resources acting on a mass email damaging David Tillman who ask for it when he sent out a mass email addressing emotions about the closure but didn't expect to hear a response by a piss-off employee, laid-off Nurses and CNAs, employees that have dedicated years to the fund exploring job opportunities to have a nursing manager forcing her to resigning (we are told to find other employement because we are expected to close-how is this possible when most of us are fulltimers and jobs opportunities are limited... Nancy Ramirez, Acute Care Manger, we are only trying to get by and you've lost compassion (I was told you never had any to begin with, shame on you)... how about families that are taking advantage of STLOOO efforts in keeping the hospital open putting up signs that say that that resdient is protected but has never done one thing to join the fight but choses to waste time complaining about the lack of activites or nursing efforts even with all the money he lives and brags about but insist on keeping his father on LTC, or how about another who will ride out this wave of imminent closure but will cooperate with social services downing nursing staff in the process - if her caregivers are wrong or lacking, MOVE HER OUT, you obviously have options, others unfortunately DONT-we would love to focus on those who want to stay and deserve OUR ATTENTION...

Well, I purged out all the crap that has happened since the closure that I am aware of... Ken should have and could have addressed more... I would have love to hear answers to this...

P.S. David Tillman has a BODYGUARD!!! hahahahahahahahaha, what a joke!!! I haven't seen him in awhile in the main building... does anyone know where that rat is hiding...?!?

Lack of MONEY?? No!

Lack of MORALS? YES!!!!

I am disgusted with whatever the hell is happening out there. I went to the clinic in Woodland Hills today. The usual entrance was blocked by trucks. I had to drive around the back and was almost hit by another car that looked lost. Guards? Gates? No way out? No other medical places are fenced in like this. Now I can see what you're talking about and will find another doctor group that is patient friendly. The whole place is bad idea.

Let's list other MPTF schemes that are "not a good idea".

How about threats and intimidation of family members to get their resident out. Social services provided private contact information to an outside "vendor." Mortuary calls were made "on behalf of Motion Picture" to family members.

Stay tuned, and visit: http://www.savingthelivesofourown.org/

I had checked out the Motion Picture facility when my mother, a retired background singer and member of SAG and AFTRA, was hospitalized from a house fire. She was in Sherman Oaks Health and Rehab which, although a step above other convalescent care facilities, was still lacking. My mother had always spoken so highly of the Motion Picture
facility, and that is why I was surprised that it -- at least the convalescent and long-term care facility -- was about on a par with Sherman Oaks Health & Rehab, only it was 2X more expensive for the same level of care...and as a requirement of being accepted into the facility, I had to not only give the administration full disclosure of her financial status, but the right to open all of her mail, including her bank statements, and social security and
SAG pension checks. I thought it was too invasive and elected not to put her there because there were too many
opportunities for mismanagement of the residents' finances. Guess given the current situation, my instincts were right on. Has any investigation, audit, or probe been launched?

Was Katzenberg faking it when he got the award in 08? You quoted Variety " The DreamWorks CEO says that his interest in his No. 1 charity -- the Motion Picture & Television Fund Foundation, of which he is chairman of the board," but his No. 1 charity didn't exist.

The 501c3 charity he referred to, the MPTF Foundation, was legally dissolved in April 07, in a document signed by Tillman and Roger Mayer. This is another instance of being all about image and no substance. In 08, what was called the Foundation was a division or department of the MPTF Corp which Mancuso headed. Confused?

So are donors. Not to worry though, when reporters started asking questions a few weeks ago, MPTF revised history before our very eyes again, and sanitized its website. The MPTF Foundation is now a Committee, of which Katzenberg is Chair. What does that make Scherer? CEO of a committee?

The Rabi was seen yesterday telling a resident to start looking for a place cause the hospital is closing. Can anyone do something about this asshole Rabi??

At last the truth revealed!

A "Prop" police car at the MPTF Entrance that leads to:
A "Prop" Doctor David Tillman, Chief Executive Officer
A "Prop" Nurse Seth Ellis, Chief Operating Officer
A "Prop" "Dr." Nate Newman, Social Services Director:
A "Prop" Board of Trustees

Disgusting!

TheWrap's experience reminds me of Theresienstadt, known for its culture, its famous prisoners, and its infamous visit by International Red Cross officials.

They used a (bleep)ing stunt police car!!!

Intimidation and deception against our own people. It is time the BILLIONAIRE BOYS CLUB rethink their tactics. The holiday season is coming up fast. Lots and lots of ticket sales, or maybe NOT. BOYCOTT. I got three letters for ya! S K G !

Ken Scherer in LIE TO ME, "the compelling drama series inspired by the scientific discoveries of a real-life psychologist who can read clues embedded in the human face, body and voice to expose the truth and lies in criminal investigations."

Ken Scherer is only a barking dog. He is nobody. He will crawl back under a rock or pitch Hugh Hefner for some work when the families along with their well placed friends in SAG and The Teamsters prevail. Have you ever shook his hand? I have...sheesh. He doesn't grip your hand like a man - there is no life in his spirit, and vice versa.

What we need to overcome is a consciousness that pervades our industry that allowed this to happen in the first place. It's not a movie industry thing, it's a humanity thing - the elderly are not productive, they rarely vote, and they are not worth shit.

That sentiment is echoing along the halls of the Motion Picture Home as Seth Ellis and David Tillman rub their hands together waiting for the day that revenues start pouring in as a result of their property development plans.

Let's be real. Scherer is a whipped dog - look at him. We have our work cut out for us. We're not going to start knocking heads, just changing them.

Today, November 10, 2009, you placed 2 full page ads in Variety. In one case a circle surrounds GIANT letters that read: "Is the entire MPTF "Home" closing? [the ad continues with] "The answer is NO" [underline NO].

You then go on to state: "The acute care hospital and attached long term care unit are the only MPTF service areas that are closing."

Guess what Ken, as you well know the "HOME" is the long term care facility, and yes, you have been desperately trying to close it, to throw out the sick and handicapped residents of the Home, ages 68-109.

You Ken and the MPTF Board and chief administrators are hopelessly deceptive - you can't seem to be able to stop lying despite getting caught time after time. You just got caught lying about the closure date, and admitting to deliberately placing a police car in front of the Home to intimidate the handicapped residents, and just days after, here you go again with conspicuous public relations spin/lies that don't fool anybody.

You state in the other ad "Have there been any deaths related to stress or transfer? NO!" How much you wanna bet, Ken. Let's see what the Judge has to say about this one. You won't be able to hide behind "well placed paid ads", oh, and that gratuitous investigation you refer to sometimes, it won't help, that one will just make things even worse for you. If I were the Judge Ken I'd be sooooo angry. I'd reeeally reeeeeeeally worry about this one if I were you and your friends.

Question if I may.

How much of the donors money did you use to pay for the 2 full page ads? Is it money donated by Heather Locklear or Jennifer Aniston or George Clooney or Mr. Spielberg, or is it coming from $10, $25, $50, $100 donations - you know, from worthless people, like the ones in Long Term Care who don't have the kind of money you and your fellow Board members do7 Is this donor money you used, because if it is you have wasted even more donor money (or money that would be better spent for the Home) for these ads on top of the $10,500 x 100 or $1,050,000 of money you are deliberately throwing away every single month in an effort to get CLEANSE THE CAMPUS OF SICK AND HANDICAPPED OLD PEOPLE, to keep it open for other services and for richer people who are "healthy." [Ask COO Seth Ellis for a copy of his interview in Nursing Home Magazine when he talks about no one wanting to see sickness on this [Motion Picture Fund] Campus. Every bed in the Home with a resident in it is worth $10,500 or more. Your decision to keep needy people in the Industry "out" is causing vast losses - we get it.

Yeah Ken, there's a difference between life and death and your "other services." Any writer who goes on strike can live without your $200 financial assistance that you might give out during a strike; sure it's helpful, but we can live without it, we can live without the minimal day care you provide, we can live without somebody coming to our home when we are 80 to advise us to put carpet in a room instead of shiny tile so we don't fall. We can live without that albatross of a swimming pool and the temperature heated to a cozy 87 degrees [How many people use that pool each day, 9 - tell us about the losses there, what do you take in a day, $20?

What we can't live without is the one thing you are trying to utterly destroy, "a home with nursing care" if and when we reach that stage - for everybody in the Industry who is not wealthy like you and your Board friends. A home Ken where we can maintain our dignity at an undignified time in our lives. A home where we can grow old without wishing we were dead every day we wake up. That's what you want to close Ken, that's what you want to take away from us, and we all know it. Put that in your full page ad.

LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE LIE.
Do you mind if I call you Nixon?

Perhaps the reputation of the MPTF is being damaged, not by the bloggers...but by the MPTF that is throwing the elderly out of their promised final home. Or, damaged by using tactics such as intimadation "the bogus police car" in front of the hospital to scare residents and families. Or, damaged by Dr. Tillman lying to the families in the early meeting only to be contradicted by other spokepeople in later months. Or, damaged by not accepting donations made to the LTC. Or, the rabbi telling a patient, "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. I wonder how old that patient was? Or, damaged by barring a son from seeing his mother for an entire week.

No, Mr. Scherer, I do not think the bloggers could ever come close to doing the damage the MPTF has done and keeps doing to itself.

As the holidays approach its time for gratitude and peace, but its not Thanksgiving quite yet so there is still time for plain straight talk.

What a pathetic and revealing interview Mr. Scherer granted over the weekend to The Wrap. Why would the MPTF’s PR Crisis Manager allow it to happen? One could speculate that the force of events has begun to work against the MPTF’s draconian closure decision and now the tone of their words is shifting from arrogant certainty to verbal and body language hoping to evoke sympathy and pity from the community. Unfortunately he reveals his true agenda on the closure when he claims in The Wrap story that he can’t think about what to do with the buildings after the units close because he’s “too emotionally concerned with what ‘to do’ with the patients.” What “to do” with the patients? Scherer and his team don’t see their patients and residents as people to whom they made a promise of lifetime care, but rather as stuff they don’t want anymore.

At first the MPTF resolutely claimed they “had no choice” but to close. Now they’ve made “a few mistakes” and Mr. Scherer expresses concern that the organization’s reputation has been damaged by media and blogs that have publicly challenged the MPTF’s decisions since last January. Just in case you missed the story the MPTF is and has been the villain in this morality tale since the beginning. There is a right and wrong in this story and the MPTF is humanly, ethically, and morally wrong. They hide behind financial shortfalls that nobody believes exist.

Yes, Mr. Scherer, there have been mistakes — like making life changing decisions for residents in a vacuum, commissioning closure studies from consultants who were paid to provide pre-determined results, violating first amendment rights of family members, using social workers to mislead and frighten patients, having the in-house Rabbi comfort frightened residents by telling them “what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger”, placing security guards and studio police cars at entrances to intimidate visitors, banning family members from campus, restricting press access to residents who disagreed with the closure decision, and intentionally locking doors to inhibit the free movement of residents in their home. Now Mr. Scherer is trying to affably distance himself and his fellow managers from their own hardball tactics. Yes, there were many mistakes — now — because their tactics didn’t work. If residents and their families had compliantly moved to other LTC facilities months ago their tactics would be smugly celebrated from behind the closed doors of their elegant Saban Health Center offices.

For Mr. Scherer to blame the media and blogs, such as this one, for the MPTF's troubles is both delusional and galling. Nobody is responsible for the MPTF's sinking reputation but MPTF leadership. The MPTF created this issue by abandoning its historic mission of charity. Members of the management team and board may be lying awake at night trying to figure out how their miscalculations destroyed their reputations and the trust our community once had in the MPTF. The good news is that there is nothing wrong with the MPTF’s historic mission. The MPTF’s problems reside in the leadership agendas that abandoned the mission. But management issues can be solved by new faces or, as in the case of Ebenezer Scrooge (a holiday reference), an enlightened view of the future.

Mr. Scherer looked uncomfortable as he tried to find the right words to shift the MPTF’s role from villain to victim. Is this a change of heart or sober reflection on the potentially devastating impact of legal action if the MPTF proceeds on its original course? If MPTF leadership believed they were on solid legal ground, our often disheartening knowledge of them suggests LTC residents would have faced even more aggressive tactics as the October 31 closure deadline approached.

Even as the MPTF bobs and weaves looking for the moral high ground that has eluded them since the beginning of this crisis, our community, in ever growing numbers, continues to support LTC residents who are in jeopardy of loosing their homes. Sadly, they aren’t the only victims of this MPTF misfire. In fact, the residents of the MPTF’s Independent and Assisted Living communities face an equally frightening plight because they live each day knowing that their MPTF LTC safety net is, at present, gone. They are all only one unexpected incident away from loosing their homes and their life affirming contact with spouses, friends and caregivers — a fact that MPTF management has refused to acknowledge. Maybe they’ve just lost sight of what is so clear to the rest of us — eventually most every resident on the Wasserman Campus will need LTC. If they can’t get it at MPTF, Independent and Assisted Living residents will be forced to leave their home…maybe never to return. Is this the new “aging in place” mission in action?

And so the days pass and the perception of winners and losers is giving way to the necessity of survival—for all parties involved. Keep your eyes open everyone…we’re going to be subjected to some fantastic, if not particularly believable MPTF performances in the weeks ahead.

Mr. Scherer, Dr. Tillman, Nurse Ellis, Mr. Mancuso, Mr. Katzenberg, Mr. Koch and all the rest of them who have caused and supported this nightmare are now seeking to stave off their day of legal comeuppance and save their public lives. And frankly, all things considered, we hope they can. In the weeks ahead we’ll be hearing more and more language calculated to release the pressure that’s been building steadily against them…and maybe right around Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza, as if by magic, they will find the solution that only geniuses like them could have found…and the home will be saved, the fundraising money will roll again, and all will be forgiven. And Hollywood will have another story of redemption and the community will have gotten what its wanted and demanded all along — a happy, principled resolution to a crisis.

People are quick to deride most actors for being flippant at best, and uninvolved in social issues, save for those few who capture the camera lens to document their giving.

Bill Smitrovich and Anne-Marie Johnson represent a vast and growing wave of actors whose humanity is not a performance. SAG has held the hand of the residents and families pretty much all through this ordeal. You would find both of them at rallies and events, leading the charge both on the street and in the hallways of SAG offices.

They 'take care of their own'. Smitrovich and Johnson need to be part of the new MPTF regime. Under their watch the MPTF will once again be home to a world class acute and long term care center.

They get it.

SAG Hollywood Board meeting gets unanimous reaction of disapproval to MPTF's actions of LAPD prop car at Nursing Home front entrance.

Also, SAG Board Members applaud stay of evictions for the Long Term Care(LTC) residents, with MPTF's announcement to extend licensing for one more year.

SAG First Vice President Anne-Marie Johnson, and SAG Hollywood Seniors Performers Committee Chairman, Bill Smitrovich, gave impassioned speeches, and vow to lead the charge to build a new day for our Industry healthcare safety net.

Anne-Marie Johnson also gave praise to the Teamsters Local 399, for their pledged public support, and being a main contributor in the drive to stop the MPTF closure attempt of the Long Term Care historic mission at the Home.

Also shared at the meeting... donor options on LTC future.

Buyer beware,

The MPTF is asking the entertainment community to buy the fact that it's just a little mistake, that for the past 16 weeks, a fake Los Angeles Police Department squad car has been parked at the front gate or front entrance of the Hospital unit and long Term Care facility of the Motion Picture & Television Fund campus.

Hey Jeff Katzenberg, did you make the decision on this call to intimidate and abuse, by way of fear, all the most helpless, sick, and fragile, residents you want to evict from their homes...
or was it Seth Ellis?

Either way, Ken Scherer, you look like you're the one with feathers in your mouth.

The MPTF residents are resting easier tonight, knowing the entertainment community is growing increasingly stronger in their support to keep the Long Term Care facility in place for today, tomorrow, and decades to come.

To all of the MPTF residents, we will not abandon you on our watch.

It could be us, in your shoes someday.

Keep the faith, don't buy the current MPTF "we're looking out for you", lies. The ONLY, "we're looking out for you" the MPTF is doing, is looking to get all of the residents OUT.

Thanks, but NO thanks Ken!

The fund hasn’t decided what to do with the building?

Really???!! Want to phone a friend to help you answer that one Ken? Phone Seth Ellis. He was in main hall with two contractors wearing badges and carrying CAD drawings, and his conversation was overheard.

My kids volunteered at the Motion Picture Home. I was so proud of them.
I used to have a lot of respect for Mr. Katzenberg. Something has gone very wrong here. Have we become so detached from reality that we have no regard for the lives of these precious old people? What about other people in our industry who need and deserve a place at the Home. Why shouldn't we provide a special place for them, may be for you and me when we need it? This is our treasure as an Industry and it should be our priority. Turn this around and devote yourselves to building a bigger and even better place. We can do it if we care.
What is wrong with us? I am so angry Mr. Katzenberg!!!

"Ken Cheerer"

What have you got?

I've known you for years Ken so nothing personal, but you have started to look like Nixon before he resigned.
Suggestion: Call Girardi & Keese [like others]. Maybe they can get you a deal

Time's not on the Board's side.

By the way, is it my imagination, or is Katzenberg distancing himself from this botched plan, and from you, Ken?

What do you think?

Last year my organization honored Jeffrey Katzenberg with the Norma Zarky Humanitarian Award. An article in Variety read in part: ...

On the subject of their vast philanthropic endeavors, "We believe in the word 'yes.' We tend to say 'yes' a lot," Jeffrey Katzenberg says of himself and his wife, Marilyn. The DreamWorks CEO says that his interest in his No. 1 charity -- the Motion Picture & Television Fund Foundation, of which he is chairman of the board -- began with his Hollywood godfather, Lew Wasserman.

"Twenty years ago, Lew summoned me to his office and literally took me by the hand, taking me to the Motion Picture Home to show me around," Katzenberg recalls. "He was basically ordering me to go to work on its behalf. He was an amazing man who didn't ask. He just stated things. You said, 'Yes, sir.' And so, something that started out as sort of put upon me I very quickly understood the importance of and fell in love with it." ...

If Wasserman is the one who got him started, Kirk Douglas played his part too.

"Many years ago, I asked Kirk about philanthropy, and he said, "First, you need to know that you haven't learned how to live until you've learned how to give,' " Katzenberg recalls. "I never forgot that line. He is such a living Spartacus. I'd follow him anywhere."
-----
This year I hope you listen to them Mr. Katzenberg. Closing the Motion Picture hospital is not what Wasserman or Douglas they had in mind. MPTF administrators have made private statements to the effect that they are taking this course of action for "The Chairman." Is that true?

The Media and Bloggers are damaging MPTF's reputation? What? Oh, must be because MPTF can't control the message, and MPTF's euphemistic propaganda is being debunked left and right.

Keep looking evasive Ken Scherer, you're doing wonders for your reputation all by yourself. Or maybe you were thinking about what to say next. Here's a clue - start blowing the whistle.

So, Ken, you think it's the "media and bloggers" who are ruining the MPTF's reputation??!!

Really???!!

Guess what, Ken, it is the "ethical and moral bankruptcy" of the Administrators & Board of Trustees that is destroying the MPTF.

Blaming the 'messenger' doesn't solve the 'crime'.

Please stop this! The cafeteria has run out of Mac and Cheese. Next he'll be eating the BLT's!

Everyone is calling me to check in on The Wrap for the latest MPTF pr blunders. Look like Scherer is the laughing stock of the industry. Too bad it's not funny.

This is the number 1 viewed story on The Wrap. Outdoing J-Lo, Zoradi, and anything else happening in Tinsel Town. Everyone is talking about this and it is about damned time.

Tonight's SAG meeting will surely take this on. When Scherer speaks, you better 'gel-in' because this swine can definitely give you the flu.

Look out.

I thought it was a joke when one person commenting referred to Ken Scherer producing a movie about a resident of the Motion Picture Home. It's not. He actually uses the Motion Picture Home in the story.
Holy mackerel, it's true. The IMDb website even lists others involved from the Motion Picture Fund. It seems this place is a playground for those in power - is donor money used? This deserves an investigation.

Ken - you've just cost the fund many tens of thousands of dollars with your admission that the cop car was a 'mistake'.

You are the mistake. So are your cohorts who are going to run the fund into the ground, leaving nothing for the industry.

You heard me - you close down the ICU which puts the hospital on the skids. You close down the LTC which will cost over $24 million per year in lost revenue. What's next?

Where is your axe going to fall next?

Anybody who has benefited from the fund owes it to themselves and our industry to call for your termination and the termination of David Tillman, Seth Ellis and the others who are ruining, absolutely defiling our beloved Motion Picture and Television Fund.

If we really want the LTC to stay functioning we have got to work to stop the government takeover of health care. If the current administration gets the healthcare bill passed the LTC will be closed forever because the current administration sees no value in prolonging the lives of the elderly, the LTC would be 10 times more expensive to operate and it would be impossible to continue without caregivers and doctors to work there.

If you have a Senator who may be thinking of voting for this fiasco then you need to contact them immediately to let them know that they should vote against this bill despite party politics. Personally, I don't want the federal government telling me what I have to buy or what doctor to see. It's bad enough that I am required to purchase car insurance so that some unisured illegal can crash into me and leave me no recourse but I will not give in to tyranny and the clear violation of the peoples trust. This is America and we have the rights to LIFE, LIBERTY and the PURSUIT of HAPPINESS.

We have the right to Life. The right to live as long as we can any way we can.
We have the right to Liberty. The liberty to choose what we think is best for ourselves and our children.
We have the right to the Pursuit of happines. We do not have the right to happiness.

Wake up before the country is stolen out from under us.

I call some of you friends. You should relinquish your positions at the Fund.

A misguided plan, a disservice to the Industry you signed on to serve.

This admission about the prop police car, it makes me angry.

I'm not the only one talking. No more money from me until things change.

ALL CURRENT AND FUTURE RESIDENTS ARE AFFECTED by the proposed closing of Long Term Care.

The 214 people who reside in the Independent Living facilities are ONE DEBILITATING ILLNESS AWAY from being HOMELESS!

They are no different from their fellow residents in Long Term Care. They were promised, regardless of how mentally or physically frail they became in later years, they would always have a home somewhere on the Wasserman Campus among familiar surroundings and familiar faces.

The betrayal of the MPTF's mission affects EVERYONE.

Wait one. Scherer gets exec producer credits on film when he should have been out raising dollars for the hospital. What are they running out there on the Wasserman campus? Just checked IMDb, MPTF payroll staff has credits too. No wonder they want to dump the most vulnerable to "save" the Fund's other activities.

Whoa, you have to be kidding me. "Script For Sale". You've got to check out imdB. This has to be the ultimate reality show that harkens back to the Christians pitted against the lions in the Coliseum.

The 'Christians', played by the innocent, frail, elderly and handicapped residents of the Motion Picture Home are thrown to the 'Lions' - the rich, powerful, studio heads and moguls.

But in this case, they are not eaten, they are 'material'. Yes, their entrails are digested by the likes of Ken and his cohorts after being gored to death in a ritual of elder cleansing. And it's all for the wont of a movie.

Maybe that's why the MPTF renewed their license. Ken isn't finished with post production and needs to shoot some footage of the last body being carried out.

Check out imdB, search for Ken Scherer. Do it before you eat.

The media and blogs aren't ruining the reputation and endangering the very existence of the MPTF, Scherer -- YOU are, along with your cronies on that board -- Katzenberg, Wasserman, Koch and the rest of the AMPTP bullies -- by closing a nursing home and evicting Hollywood's elderly.

So now you admit that you did in fact have a fake police car parked out in front of the Home to intimidate the residents and their families.

And now you regret it. I bet you do, especially since you'll hopefully be held legally liable for this reprehensible harassment.

And where are the Guilds on this? Mikulan -- why don't you do a story on how the WGA and DGA have been silent and therefore complicit in this crime against their members -- many of whom reside in that nursing home?

Look forward to more strong reporting from the Wrap. Thanks.

Dear Mr. Scherer,

Are you MPTF's full time fund raiser/CEO?

Are you the same Ken Scherer who is listed on IMDb [data base of credits] as the Producer of an upcoming movie about the life story of a resident on Campus at the MPTF who died after the closure notice?

If you are the same Ken Scherer, tell us about it. Was it tough negotiating for those rights?

If you are the same Ken Scherer, it must be tiring, producing a movie and being the full time fund raiser for the "Home."

The MPTF considers it "prohibitively expensive" to spend $15M to retrofit the facility in order to keep the elderly in the homes they were told would be theirs for life.

The MPTF does not consider it "prohibitively expensive" to spend $18M on a Health Center for active industry workers and posh new offices for the MPTF Executives and Administrators.

What's wrong with this picture?

My mother used to think the cleaning lady was stealing her shoes. Nothing could have been further from the truth. My grandfather thought his caretakers were stealing from him. I had to create a fake bank book that showed a million dollar balance to reassure him that he still had money (he had none, and never had any).

Old people are often easy to frighten, succumb to paranoia, and are suspicious. God bless them, it's a condition of old age, nothing more. To take advantage of that is more than criminal, it's mean.

How dare you try to frighten elderly people that are in your care with a cheap studio prop. Who the fuck do you think you are?

These aren't care givers. They can't be.

Run them out on a rail. They don't deserve the position they've found themselves in. Care givers care, these people could care less.

In the article it states that "The state of California has ordered MPTF to earthquake-retrofit. The fund says this would be prohibitively expensive, estimating it would cost about $15 million."

but Scherer clearly states in the interview that there are many that are served in that facility (building) and will continue to be served in that building.

Which is it?

So is there going to be the 'ordered' retrofit or is this just another excuse...???

No plans for the facility Ken?

A public thank you to certain folk at the "A" firm who chose morality over fear of job loss for you know what.

There are plans Ken, big plans - in writing - nice drawings/blueprints, you should ask to see them.

It gets deeper and deeper and deeper.

Ken Scherer looks like a man who got the following legal advise [applicable to all the Fund leaders who came up with this bullshit plan] from the Fund's very expensive lawyers:

Fraud, Perjury, Ruined Reputation, Jail time. Back off.

Every morning I receive my daily "update" from The Wrap. I look forward to clearly-reported breaking Industry news.
This morning I was beyond pleased to see this piece was the first entry for today's report. Thank you Sharon and Staff, and a big shout-out to Steve Mikulan for excellent reporting on a complicated situation.
I watched the video of the whipped dog (AKA Mr. Scherer) and was so grateful to hear that all of our residents will be enjoying the coming Holidays in their Home. You all must see the Fund at the holidays! The decorations in F Wing are worth the trip!
I would also like to salute my friends at Saving The Lives - they are the kindest, totally-tireless, most wonderful advocates anyone could ask for. Though the fight is far from over, I suspect they are pleased to know the Holidays will proceed as usual.
And, most importantly, with the forces of the families and the legal team, there will be many, many more holidays and celebrations to come. And if there's Justice (and I know there will be!), the corrupt Management and Board members will be replaced, and Peace will prevail....

Some people can't help but be a tool of those that sign their paycheck. Ken Scherer is paid very well. However much they are paying you Ken can't be enough.

Look at yourself! Look at the still shot in the video. You have aged over the past year. The weight of what you are doing is not only killing your reputation in the industry (nobody respects a hatchet man who is going after the elderly), but it look like it is killing you!

Save yourself and in doing so stand with the families to save the future of the LTC.

Ken, who do you think you are fooling? You and the MPTF administration, along with certain big name MPTF Board members acting in concert, have NO interest in ANY of the residents well being at the Motion Picture & Television Home. You have spent the last 11 months demonstrating it.

You talk about damaging the MPTF's reputation, well NO one has done a better job of it than you and the fore said above.

Residents have suffered greatly and some have also passed in the turmoil you have been co-commander/leader of.

The entertainment community has cried out to the MPTF to stop this action of closure and and secure the historic care of our elderly, but with extreme arrogance on the MPTF's part, the cries have fallen on deaf ears.

You will show more shame then ever imagined in your days, and years to come!

The MPTF current leadership will ALWAYS be remembered for what they have done to the sickest and most fragile at the "HOME".

There in lies YOUR legacy.

By the time this all settles, you'll be lucky if you can eat in an Industry hot spot, or attend an Industry function without being scorned.

The elderly residents who are being evicted want to remain - not because the grounds of the Wasserman Campus are beautiful - but because this is their HOME.

They moved to the MPTF's Home in good faith and were promised LIFETIME CARE.

THEY - and ALL RESIDENTS - of the MPTF's retirement community have been BETRAYED!

THE ONLY SOLUTION TO THIS SITUATION IS THIS:

Dr. David Tilman: GOODBYE

Nurse Seth Ellis: SEE YA LATER! MUCH!!!

Susan Poprock: DOCVEDANYA!

Ken Scherer: DON'T LET THE DOOR HIT YOU ON THE WAY OUT!!

Nate Newman: SAYONARA!!!

Rabbi Rosenberg: AUF WEIDERSEHN!!

NOTHING SHORT OF RIDDING OURSELVES OF THOSE THAT HAVE SOLD OUT OUR ELDERLY SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A 'WIN'. THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT ARE RUINING MOTION PICTURE HEALTHCARE.

"MPTF officials DID NOT let Wrap journalists speak with any of the residents."

WHY?

Afraid the TRUTH will come out?

DISGRACEFUL!

"police car in the lot not a good idea"

Another lie? The presence of a fake police car whose purpose is to intimidate is an admitted ploy by the MPTF?

WTF????

Who are we dealing with here? They are so comfortable now admitting that it was a hoax to put the fake studio cop car in the lot?

Come on people, we need to get rid of those that are playing with the emotions of the elderly in such an irresponsible way!!!

Did the portly, and getting portly-er Rabbi Rosenberg agree to this lie to put a police car in the lot? Is that the sort of intimidation we are to expect at the hands of our caregivers? Is that what you are all about, chaplain to the elderly and sick? This is happening on your watch!

I am so disgusted over this revelation Ken, thank you very much for putting your foot back in your mouth. A comfortable position!

Second only to having your head up your ass!!

Do u believe it when he says there are no plans for the property? I don't? Who is he kidding and who does he think we are? Is this another lie from them? Why don't you ask what they are thinking?? We know what they want, they want NO SICK OLD PEOPLE.

THEY DO NOT WANT TO TAKE CARE OF 'OUR OWN' AS IF IT WERE UP TO THEM, AND IT IS NOT!!

it is up to us to fight, fight, fight against this inhumane closure.

please help to insure that this wonderful place stays open for everyone. I will certainly need to avail myself of this facility in my old age. To close thehospital and nursing home would be such a shame. Please sign the petition online and it will help everyone.

Ken - you look tired, distracted and dismayed. We aren't trying to ruin the reputation of the Fund. We recognize that it has done and continues to do much needed work for the industry. We fully support the Motion Picture Home, the residents in all parts of the facility, and those who are working to return those parts that are languishing under your control.

I'm glad that The Wrap was able to see the intrinsic beauty of the campus, and recognize that this is a facility worth saving. We will continue to do what is necessary to shed light on the situation. If the MPTF feels that this is ruining their reputation, then maybe they can salvage this ship that is sinking under the weight of their bloated executives that accept opulent digs and hefty pay raises while they cry the blues.

The good news is that the MPTF had to refile and extend their operating permit to keep the LTC and Acute Care Center open.

We will not stop fighting until the mandate of 'Taking Care of Our Own' rights the course and returns the LTC to the world class facility it was before guys like Tillman and Ellis got their mitts on it.

this is nice article. i like it,after read people must be try think about this, thanks for this article.

YES

Sign the petition, that's a start: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/keepthemptfhomeopen
