‘The Artist,’ ‘Tinker, Tailor’ Top BAFTA Nominations

Best Film nods also go to “Drive,” “The Help” and “The Descendants”

"The Artist," "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and "Hugo" were among the leaders in nominations for the Orange British Academy Films Awards, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced early Tuesday morning in London.

"The Artist" and "Tinker, Tailor" were nominated in the Best Film category, along with "Drive," "The Help" and "The Descendants."

Overall, "The Artist" received 12 nominations to lead the field, followed by "Tinker, Tailor" with 11 and "Hugo" with nine. "My Week With Marilyn" received six, and "War Horse" and "The Help" five each.

Gary OldmanThe nominees in many categories showed a strong resemblance to the likely fields at the Academy Awards, with a handful of British additions. Lead acting nominees include George Clooney ("The Descendants"), Brad Pitt ("Moneyball"), Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo ("The Artist"), Meryl Streep ("The Iron Lady") and Michelle Williams ("My Week With Marilyn").

Brits Jim Broadbent ("The Iron Lady"), Carey Mulligan ("Shame") and Judi Dench ("My Week With Marilyn") are represented in the supporting categories alongside the likes of Christopher Plummer ("Beginners"), Jonah Hill ("Moneyball"), Jessica Chastain ("The Help") and Octavia Spencer ("The Help").

Despite the four nominations for "Drive," including Best Film and Best Director, co-star and critics' award favorite Albert Brooks was missing from the Supporting Actor category.

The documentary "Senna" and the dark "We Need to Talk About Kevin" are among the more surprising films to receive multiple nominations; each received three, with the former in the running for Outstanding British Film and the latter landing a Best Director nomination for Lynne Ramsay.

"Bridesmaids" continued its unlikely awards-season run with a pair of nominations, one for supporting actress Melissa McCarthy and another for its screenplay.

The results were foreshadowed last week when BAFTA announced its longlists, which narrowed each category to 15 semi-finalists. In those lists, "Tinker, Tailor" and "Marilyn" each received 16 mentions, with "The Iron Lady" receiving 14, "The Artist" 13 and "Hugo" and "War Horse" 12.

On the longlists, certain films were singled out as being the top choices of the BAFTA chapter members who will make the final decisions in a number of categories (the opposite of the Oscar process, where branch members select the nominees and everyone votes in the final round). The top chapter choice was "The Artist," followed by "Tinker, Tailor" and "Hugo."

The nominations were announced by actors Daniel Radcliffe and Holliday Grainger and by BAFTA chairman Tim Corrie.

The Orange British Academy Film Awards will be presented on Sunday, February 12 at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. Stephen Fry will host.
