“I cannot imagine that people would think this was a publicity stunt,” John Irwin says of on-again, off-again couple

It may not be the love of the century, but the romance between Aubrey O’Day and Pauly D is absolutely real, according to the producer of E!’s upcoming celebreality series “Famously Single.”

The pop songtress and the ex-“Jersey Shore” DJ really hooked up on the show, which puts celebrities into group therapy under the tutelage of therapist Darcy Sterling.

“I cannot imagine that people would think this is a publicity stunt,” said John Irwin, the veteran reality TV producer best-known for “Couples Therapy” and “Celebrity Rehab.”

“We shot the show in November and we’ve got people on the payroll that stay together for six or seven months?,” he added.

But real love is evidently pretty tough to pull off. The gossip columns have been loaded with tales of the couple’s ups and downs. The New York Post reported in May that O’Day had dumped Pauly because of infidelity allegations.

But O’Day has apparently had a change of heart recently: The E! Twitter page earlier this week featured this romantic snapshot:

Irwin isn’t making any promises that people will be reading about a D-O’Day wedding anytime soon, but he is amazed that romance bloomed during shooting and then kept going.

“The process was like sixteen days, or something like that, that they were together in this house going through this thing, and the fact that they came out of there, and actually forged a real relationship that is still going, I think that is a pretty amazing thing,” he said.

Rounding out the cast are Brandi Glanville, “Bachelorette” winner Josh Murray, models Jessica White and Calum Best, musician Somaya Reece and former NFL star Willis McGahee.

Who else has a hookup?

“You’ll have to watch and see,” Irwin said.

“Famously Single” premieres June 14 on E!
