‘The Avengers’ Heading for Billion Dollars in Box Office

"The Avengers" took in $207.4 million in its record-breaking debut weekend, Disney and Marvel say. That's higher than initial estimates

"The Avengers" is headed for the billion-dollar box office club.

Disney and Marvel Entertainment said Monday that the record-breaking weekend take for "The Avengers" was bigger — at $207.4 million — than they had estimated Sunday.

Monday's actual figure topped by $7.1 million the studios' Sunday estimate of $200.3 million for the opening weekend.

The unprecedented domestic number, combined with its $654 million worldwide in just 12 days, puts "The Avengers" on track to be a $1 billion blockbuster.

It would be Marvel's first film to pass that mark.

"I wouldn't be surprised if it passed 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2' for the No. 3 spot," Jeff Bock, a senior box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations Col., told TheWrap Monday. That movie took in $1.3 billion last year

The all-time box office leaders are two James Cameron films. "Avatar" rang up $2.7 billion in 2009, breaking the mark of $2.1 billion set by "Titanic" in 1997.

"The Avengers" should keep rolling both domestically and overseas.

Warner Bros.' "Dark Shadows," starring Johnny Depp, is the only studio film opening against it this weekend. The following week will bring "The Dictator," "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and "Battleship."

While the film has opened in the majority of overseas territories, its massive debuts suggest it will have some legs. It took in $17.9 million in Russia last week and $18 million from China over the weekend. Major markets remaining are Israel (May 10), Poland (May 11) and Japan (August 17).

“'It is a testament to all involved with this film that audiences across the board are embracing the film in this record-setting way,” Marvel President Kevin Feige, a producer on the film, said in a statement.
