Avril Lavinge’s “Hello Kitty” music video has sparked major backlash online for its dead-behind-the-eyes portrayal of the singer’s Japanese backup dancers and general stereotypical depiction of kawaii culture.
Also, people hate the song, which doesn’t help matters.
GQ called the music video “digital cruelty” and made a game over how long its staff could hang in there and watch. Spoiler alert: most didn’t make it very long.

Billboard called it “an embarrassment in any language,” while SourceFed added: “Thanks for the racist appropriation of Japanese kawaii culture and not to mention the shitty shitty music, Avril … NOT.”
Uproxx titled its post “Avril Lavigne Is Why We Should Be Glad MTV Doesn’t Play Music Videos Anymore,” while Huffington Post Canada went with “And You Thought Marrying The Guy From Nickelback Was The Worst Thing Avril Lavigne Ever Did.”
The tune was co-written by that guy, Lavigne’s husband Chad Kroeger.
