List of Oscar-qualifying Films Shrinks to 248

Here’s the entire field, which is significantly smaller than it was in 2009 and 2008

The lineup of movies eligible for the 2010 Academy Awards stretches from "The A-Team" to "Youth in Revolt" and includes 248 feature films, the Academy announced on Monday.

The list includes "Black Swan" and "Black Tulip," "Unbeaten" and "Unstoppable," "Restrepo" and "Sequestro," with Jeff Bridges' two films ("Tron: Legacy" and "True Grit") sitting back-to-back and six films sporting "3D" in their titles.

As for how many of those 248 are actually in the running – well, it's safe to say that you can eliminate more than 100 of them right off the bat.

This year's slate is made up of more than two dozen fewer films than were eligible last year, when 274 were reported to have qualified, and 33 fewer than 2008, when 281 qualified.

To be eligible, feature films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes, and must open in a commercial movie theater in Los Angeles County during 2010. A run of at least seven consecutive days is required, though that run can begin in 2010 and carry over into 2011.

As always, films that premiere on television or in any other medium other than a theatrical release are ineligible. This disqualifies Olivier Assayas' acclaimed "Carlos," which debuted on French television before it played in U.S. cinemas.

Although questions had been raised about the second and third installments in the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" series because of Scandinavian television broadcasts, all three films have been deemed eligible.

Most of the films that qualify for the Academy's Best Foreign-Language Film do so under a diffferent process, and are not included on this list.

Some of the listed films have yet to fulfill their qualifying requirements – and if past years are any indication, some might not do so.

The Halle Berry film "Frankie & Alice," for example, was listed as being eligible in 2009, but its planned release was delayed until 2010. It ended up not being eligible last year, but it has qualified for this year.

We'll find out which 40 or 50 films from the list actually receive nominations on January 25, 2011, and which 15 or so win them on February 27.
