‘Hugo,’ ‘War Horse’ and ‘Super 8′ Win Awards from Sound Editors

Motion Picture Sound Editors spread awards out, honoring “Hugo,” “War Horse,” “Super 8,” “Tintin,” “The Muppets” and others

"Hugo," "War Horse," "Super 8," "The Muppets" and "The Adventures of Tintin" were among the films honored by the Motion Picture Sound Editors on Sunday night at the MPSE Golden Reel Awards, which saluted sound editing in seven film, 10 television and five computer and direct-to-video categories.

War Horse posterThe Chinese film "The Flowers of War" and the Martin Scorsese documentary "George Harrison: Living in the Material World" were also winners in the film categories from the MPSE, which cast a wide net and didn't give any film more than one award.

Of the seven MPSE winners, only two – "Hugo" and "War Horse" – are nominated for the Oscar for sound editing.

While it's hard to drawn correlations between the Golden Reel Awards and the Oscars because of the number of categories offered by the MPSE, its award for Sound Effects and Foley, which was won by "War Horse," most often corresponds to the Oscar winner.

In the television categories, "Game of Thrones" was the only nominee to win more than one award, with wins in both the Short Form Dialogue and ADR and Short Form Sound Effects and Foley categories.

Other television shows saluted by the MPSE included the long-form documentary "Gettysburg" and the series "Homeland," "The Walking Dead," "Raising Hope" and "Grey's Anatomy."

The awards were handed out in a ceremony at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. The MPSE Filmmaker Award went to producer Gale Anne Hurd, while the MPSE Career Achievement Award recipient was sound designer and editor George Watters.
