Academy Awards producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer have opted for another Oscar rookie as a key member of their team: production designer John Myhre, who will be making his first appearance on the Oscars in that capacity.
Myhre has, however, appeared on the show before. He won Oscars for his art direction on "Chicago" and "Memoirs of a Geisha," and was nominated for "Elizabeth," "Dreamgirls" and "Nine."
"John is a prolific production designer, who has created some of the most intriguing sets that we've ever seen," said Grazer and Mischer in an Academy release announcing his selection. "His cinematic perspective will be a great contribution to our team dynamic and the show itself."
Myhre has been working in film for more than 20 years, but is probably best known for his regular collaborations with director Rob Marshall, on whose films he won both his Oscars. “The greatest thing about working with John," Marshall once said, “is when he presents me with something that I never imagined, something that unlocks a whole new area I can go into.”
Myhre himself described his job as production designer by saying, "You have to break down each element—the look, the sets, the location, the look, the costumes—and say, ‘What is the story we’re telling with this element?’”
