Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere" won the top Golden Lion prize at the Venice film festival Saturday. The event's best picture award was chosen unanimously by the jury, headed by Quentin Tarantino.
"This film enchanted us from its first screening," Tarantino said, according to AP.
Alex de la Iglesia won the best director award for horror movie "Balada Triste de Trompeta" (The Last Circus).
Vincent Gallo won the best actor prize for his performance as a suspected Taliban fighter in "Essential Killing."
Gallo, who gives a silent performance in the film, did not take the stage to accept the award, Reuters reported.
Ariane Labed won the best actress trophy for "Attenberg." "Road to Nowhere" director Monte Hellman won a special career award.
Coppola's "Somewhere" stars Stephen Dorff as a movie star taking care of his 11-year-old daughter played by Elle Fanning.
Coppola partly based the film on her own experiences as a young girl traveling with her father, director Francis Ford Coppola, from one hotel to another.
"Thanks to my dad for teaching me," she said at the awards ceremony," Reuters reported.
