Relativity, Weinstein Co. Negotiating to Acquire Troubled 'Jane Got a Gun'

Relativity Media and the Weinstein Company have emerged from a heated bidding war in exclusive negotiations to jointly acquire U.S. distribution rights to Gavin O'Connor's Western "Jane Got a Gun," an individual with the project has told TheWrap.

Joint acquisitions have happened in the past, though the latest distribution deal represents a unique partnership that will see both companies bring different strengths and resources to the table.

Natalie Portman stars as the title character alongside Joel Edgerton and Ewan McGregor.

CAA brokered the deal, which is for a wide release.

Electric Daisy Carnival promoter Insomniac Events will make a documentary about the 2013 dance festival in Las Vegas "through the eyes of the fans and the creative minds behind the event."

Fillmakers Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz's Magical Elves will direct the film, which Haven Entertainment will produce. Magical Elves previously directed the Katy Perry and Justin Bieber concert movies, which made more than $100 million between them at the box office.

Jon Stewart has tapped Gael Garcia Bernal to star in his feature directorial debut "Rosewater," TheWrap has learned.

Scott Rudin is producing with Stewart and Gigi Pritzker of OddLot Entertainment, which is financing the film.

Stewart is taking a 12-week hiatus from hosting Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" in order to make the movie. "Daily Show" correspondent John Oliver will take over hosting duties for eight weeks during Stewart's absence.

eOne Picks Up Princess Diana Biopic Starring Naomi Watts

Entertainment One has secured domestic distribution rights to “Diana,” a biopic of the late princess starring Naomi Watts, the company announced on Thursday.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Oliver Hirschbiegel (“Downfall”) directed the film from a script by Stephen Jeffreys. The film depicts the last two years of Diana’s life, in particular her relationshsip with Dr. Hasnat Khan.

“’Diana’ will give audiences worldwide a chance to not only fall in love with the Princess all over again, but also discover a part of her life up until now kept out of the public eye,” Dylan Wiley, eOne US VP of theatrical marketing and distribution, said in a statement. “And only Naomi Watts could bring such a modern icon to life, through a truly beautiful and nuanced performance.”

Richard Cordiner will adapt "Spacesuit" for Warner Bros., his first script in a two-film blind deal, according to two individuals with knowledge of the deal.

Cordiner is a U.K. transplant that moved to the United States a couple of years ago to work for Venables Bell & Partners, a San Francisco-based advertising agency. He previously worked at firms Young & Rubicam and Leo Burnett in London.
