Hal David, Burt Bacharach's Songwriting Partner, Dead at 91

Hal David, the award-winning lyricist who partnered with Burt Bacharach to create hits like “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" and “I Say a Little Prayer,” died Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 91.

David (pictured at right above, along with Bacharach and singer Dionne Warwick) suffered a stroke and died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The son of Austrian immigrants, his career took off after “Magic Moments,” sung by Perry Como, broke the top 10 in 1958. David then teamed up with Burt Bacharach for a successful collaboration that spanned decades, generated dozens of successful songs – “Alfie,” “What the World Needs Now Is Love” and “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” among them -- and made Dionne...

Steve Franken, the actor who portrayed playboy dilettante Chatsworth Osborne Jr. on "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" and multiple characters on "Bewitched," died Friday, Franken's agent told TheWrap. He was 80.

Franken had been battling cancer, his wife Jean told the New York Times.

Jerry Nelson, a master of voices and puppetering who voiced Muppets including Count von Count during more than 40 years with "Sesame Street," has died. He was 78.

Also a musician and actor, he took part in dozens of Muppet projects, from the 1971 TV movie "Tales From Muppetland: The Frog Prince," to 1979's "The Muppet Movie," to the 1980s series "Fraggle Rock," to last year's "The Muppets."

Comedian Phyllis Diller has died at the age of 95, her manager told TheWrap.

According to TMZ, Diller died at her Los Angeles home. The site said that she had fallen recently hurting her wrist and hip, and had been receiving hospice care.

Tony Scott, director of a string of high-octane blockbusters including "Top Gun," died Sunday by jumping from a suspension bridge into Los Angeles Harbor. He was 68.

Los Angeles County Coroner's Lt. Joe Bale told TheWrap that investigators had identified the deceased, Anthony David Scott of Beverly Hills, as the director and producer. His death was later confirmed by his publicist, who declined to provide further details. The death was being investigated as a suicide.

Richard Fowkes, a veteran entertainment executive who most recently ran business affairs for Legendary Entertainment, died Thursday in Los Angeles after a battle with brain cancer.

He was 66 years old.

Fowkes joined Legendary in 2007 as executive vice-president, business affairs. 

After receiving his law degree at the National Law Center of George Washington University, Fowkes began his career at the Dramatists Guild as a staff attorney, then joined Paramount’s New York-based legal department. After that, he spent two years as a production attorney at United Artists.

Veronique Peck, the widow of legendary actor Gregory Peck and a long-time active figure in the cultural life of Los Angeles, died Friday, August 17 at her home in Los Angeles.  She was 80. 

The cause was heart failure, said her children, Anthony Peck and Cecilia Peck Voll.

She and Gregory Peck were married for nearly 50 years, until his death in 2003.

Kovar was staying at a friend's house in the Chicago area, according to TMZ. A female friend who found his body noticed blood running out of Kovar's ears and nose, and called 911. He was pronounced dead at the scene by responders.

Ron Palillo, best known for his role as Arnold Horshack on the 1970s TV sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter," has died, the Palm Beach Post reports. He was 63.

He died at 4:30 a.m. at his Palm Beach Gardens home, a friend, Stacy Sacco, told the paper.

Palillo had been teaching at the G-Star Academy, a Florida charter school. He previously taught at his alma mater, the University of Connecticut, according to Corporate Artists, which employed him for speaking gigs.
