Benedict Cumberbatch Officially Cast as ‘Doctor Strange’

Scott Derrickson is directing the movie for Marvel

After weeks of negotiations, Marvel has officially cast Benedict Cumberbatch as “Doctor Strange,” the studio announced on Thursday.

Scott Derrickson will direct from a script by Jon Spaihts, and the film will hit theaters on Nov. 4, 2016.

Cumberbatch will play neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange, who after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said producer Kevin Feige. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

Cumberbatch currently stars in “The Imitation Game” and will soon be seen in “The Hobbit: The Army of the Five Armies” as Smaug and the Necromancer. He also co-stars opposite Johnny Depp in Scott Cooper‘s Whitey Bulger movie “Black Mass,” which Warner Bros. will release in September.

Cumberbatch also stars on the hit series “Sherlock” and will be returning to the stage this summer in Hamlet at the Barbican with Lyndsey Turner directing.

He’s represented by UTA and Conway van Gelder Grant.
