‘The Bling Ring’: First Look at Sofia Coppola’s Latest

Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" stars Leslie Mann and Emma Watson

Sofia Coppola is back to her moody, atmospheric examinations of youthful dissolution and driftlessness. At least that's the take away from the new trailer for "The Bling Ring."

"The Lost in Translation" director and screenwriter is taking on the true story of a group of Calabasas, Calif.,  teenagers who target and burgle celebrities like Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom. Their story inspired a fascinating 2010 Vanity Fair story about the fame-obsessed group that was ultimately accused of absconding with some $3 million in clothes and jewelry.

You wouldn't know that from the first look at Coppola's film, which pores on the sun-drenched shots of attractive teenagers shopping and cavorting, but gives little clue as to their criminal activities, aside from a grainy surveillance shot.

That's in keeping with Coppola's aesthetic, which tends to eschew plot for tone — sometimes to great effect, as in the case of "Translation," other times to cinematic somnolence, as in the case of "Somewhere."

Where will "The Bling Ring" fall on that scale?

Emma Watson and Leslie Mann star in the film, which hits theaters on June 14.
