I Remember Bea Arthur

I owe Bea Arthur about 16 years, she added that much time to my life. Laughter can do that.

The first time I saw Bea, she was in an off-Broadway show called “Three to Get Ready.” She played a lady who came out alone on the stage at night, singing an old-fashioned torch song. She sang about a guy who just ditched her and he treated her like “gar-bage.”

Everytime she hit the word “gar-bage,” the theater convulsed. That’s how I first saw her. Then we became friends years later.

I brought her out to L.A. before “All in the Family,” to do the “George Goldblum Show” -- I brought her out about three times for that. That led to one episode of “All in the Family.” Fifteen minutes into the episode, CBS was on the phone saying, “That woman is a series.” So from that one appearance on “All in the Family,” we created “Maude.”

She had the greatest timing of any comedienne in the history of the business. She could control the laughter with her face, her body, even her back. There were some laughs just from her back. She waited for an audience and controlled the audience.

You could say she had a touch of comedy genius and a touch of the clown. She was a grande dame -- a great lady.

I'd been wondering when I could read something from Norman Lear on Bea's passing. Finally, here it is.

Oh, and Mark; lucky you, seeing Bea in "Mame" on Broadway. I did see her in 2006 in her one-woman show. You are so right. She was the BEST.

I will never forget the fact that of all the shows on TV during the year my mom was dying of lung cancer, it was the "golden girls" that brought our family together and created the laughter we needed to get through it all. I wish I could have done something for Estelle and Bea during their ordeal. thanks so much to them all.

I just posted the first Appearance of Bea Arthur as MAUDE on my blog for all the young aspiring kids in this town to see what REAL writing, story development and good talent can do when mixed together on the TV screen. Oh..how we yearn for the days of great crafted shows.

and I was fortunate to see her one woman show on Broadway..

smooches,
Ester

I had the privledge of seeing "Mame" with the original cast. Bea Arthur played Vera Charles. The only way I can describe her Tony-winning performance is that she didn't really walk onto the stage. She strapped it on, and used it like Annie Oakley used a six-shooter!

She was the BEST!!!
