Bob Costas Gets Fired Up About Washington Redskins, Gun Culture and Sochi (Video)

“How the name of the Washington Redskins isn’t a football issue, I have no idea,” Costas explains.

Bob Costas’ eyes are all cleared up, but he’s still seeing red.

On Wednesday’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” the fired-up NBC Sports personality defended his reputation of mixing political talk with sports coverage.

“How the name of the Washington Redskins isn’t a football issue, I have no idea,” Costas told Meyers. “Who should be talking about that — Lou Dobbs?”

The issue also turned to the “gun culture” that Costas sees among athletes. The “Football Night in America” host wants to make a bet with vehement gun ownership defenders: “You keep track of how many good and constructive things are associated with athletes having a gun, and I’ll keep track of all the tragedies and criminality and folly — and let’s see who comes out ahead and behind, as the case may be.”

Finally, the face of recent Olympics coverage talked about perhaps the most serious issue he’s faced and used his platform to comment on: the political situation in Russia.

“I don’t know how you can do an Olympics in Sochi and not talk about Vladimir Putin,” Costas said.
