Bob Seger paid tribute to his friend and fellow Detroit native Glenn Frey on Wednesday, the anniversary of Frey’s death, releasing a tribute to the deceased Eagles singer.

The tune, “Glenn Song,” features a mournful cadence and spare, string-heavy arrangement as Seger remembers his colleague, who died January 18, 2016 at age 67.

“When I think about you I always smile,” Seger sings in the tune.

Shortly after Frey’s death last year, Seger revealed that the singer had been hospitalized since November 2015. Seger, who took Frey under his wing early in Frey’s career, said the Eagles singer and guitarist was induced into a coma by his doctors in New York after his condition worsened in the fall.

The Eagles website noted that Frey died from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia. Eagles manager Irving Azoff told TheWrap last year that the medications the singer was taking played a part in his death.

“The colitis and pneumonia were side effects from all the meds,” Azoff said. “He died from complications of ulcer and colitis after being treated with drugs for his rheumatoid arthritis which he had for over 15 years.”
