Boston Globe Reporter Tweets Incredible American Dream Story

Late Monday afternoon, the journalist Twittersphere started to buzz about the timeline of Boston Globe reporter Billy Baker, who had an incredible story about human decency and the American Dream to share.

Almost two years ago to the day, Baker wrote an article about two Vietnamese boys who, with their parents, managed to immigrate to the United States in the early 1990s. Times were tough – the family was destitute, the mother suffered from mental illness, and shortly before Baker came into their lives, the boys’ father committed suicide.

But George and Johnny Huynh, along with their older sister, overcame their challenges not just to survive, but to succeed. The boys got straight As at the country's oldest, merit admission school, Boston Latin School.

And Baker stayed on as a mentor and friend to fill “little cracks,” an adult to help guide Johnny and George.
