‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Among Writers Guild’s TV Nominees

Multiple WGA nominations also go to “Modern Family,” “House of Cards,” “The Good Wife,” “Masters of Sex” and “Orange Is the New Black”

“Breaking Bad” will soon have more opportunities to add to its crowded trophy case, with the celebrated series picking up four nominations for its final season from the Writers Guild of America on Thursday.

Vince Gilligan’s series led all TV shows with a drama series nomination plus noms for three individual episodes. Netflix’s “House of Cards” broke into the awards with three nominations: one for drama series, one for new series and one for an individual episode.

The comedies “Modern Family” and “Orange Is the New Black” also picked up three nominations, while “The Good Wife,” “30 Rock,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Masters of Sex” each received two.

In the drama series category, nominees are “Breaking Bad,” “The Good Wife,” “Homeland,” “House of Cards” and “Mad Men.” Comedy series are “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” “Parks and Recreation,” “Orange Is the New Black” and “Veep.”

The WGA announced its television, new media, news, radio, promotional writing and graphic animation nominees on Thursday.

The WGA was the second major guild to announce TV nominations this week, following by two days the Producers Guild nominations. The two guilds nominated many of the same series, including “Breaking Bad,” “House of Cards,” “Modern Family,” “30 Rock” and “Veep,” though the WGA bypassed PGA nominees “Game of Thrones,” “Downton Abbey,” “Arrested Development” and “The Big Bang Theory.”

The nominations came a couple of days after In Contention obtained a WGA film ballot that revealed that a number of top films, including “12 Years a Slave,” “Rush,” “Fruitvale Station,” “Philomena” and “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” are among the screenplays ineligible for WGA film awards because they were not made under guild contracts.

While the WGA’s film awards and nominations often differ drastically from the Oscars’ writing categories because of more restrictive guild rules, its television awards typically draw from a similar pool of eligible films as other awards shows.
