Bret Easton Ellis: ‘Hurt Locker’ Wouldn’t Have Won the Oscar If Directed by a Man

Oh, and Bret Easton Ellis hates "Avatar"

Bret Easton Ellis defended his belief that Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow is "overrated" because she's "hot." In fact, he says, she won the Academy Award because she's a woman.

"I still believe that if 'The Hurt Locker' had been directed by a man it would not have won the Oscar for best director," the "American Psycho" writer tweeted.

But that's not all: Apparently, he also believes that "The Hurt Locker," with its plot about a bomb squad in Iraq, suffered from a "female tone."

In another late-night barrage of tweets, Ellis lashed back at his critics and stood by his comments that "Kathryn Bigelow would be considered a mildly interesting filmmaker if she was a man but since she's a very hot woman she's really overrated."

He did, however, offer praise to another female Academy Award winner.

"The only time I felt a woman director deserved the Oscar was Sofia Coppola for Lost In Translation because it had a no bullshit female tone," Ellis tweeted Thursday.

Coppola, in fact, was nominated for Best Director but actually won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay — not director.

Although he finds Bigelow overrated, Ellis acknowledged a fondness for one of her earlier pictures.

"The best movie Kathryn Bigelow has made so far — and by a long shot — is the deliriously campy 'Point Break' but I'm afraid to watch it again," Ellis tweeted.

He then shed additional light on his movie watching preferences by tweeting, "I hated 'Avatar'…"

Ellis is currently at work on "The Canyons," an independent film starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen. In addition, he is well-known for over-sharing on social media about his drug use and mastering second person narration in "Bright Lights, Big City."
