Bruce Jenner’s First Wife Says His Transgender Admission Was ‘Such a Shock’ (Video)

“He told me he always wanted to be a woman,” Chrystie Scott recounts him saying in the 1970s

Bruce Jenner’s first wife appeared on “Good Morning America” Monday to recount how Bruce opened up his heart to her in the 1970s about wanting to be a woman.

“It was such a shock to me, but he opened up his heart and confessed,” Chrystie Scott said in an exclusive interview on “Good Morning America” Monday. “[He said] he had to share this deep, dark secret and he told me he always wanted to be a woman and, understandably, I was speechless. I didn’t really know what to say.”

“I was really pleased that he shared that intimacy with me, that he trusted me with his deepest, darkest secret,” she said.

Scott said it was very hard to wrap her head around Jenner’s statements because he never exhibited any female qualities. It also didn’t threaten her or pose a problem in their marriage, she said.

Scott sat next to Jenner while the Sawyer interview aired Friday. Jenner cried at times, she said, adding it was sad to see Jenner’s reaction.

“I think it was cathartic to watch it together,” she said. “It was pretty intense.”

Scott said she’s sure there are plenty of people who want to transition who don’t have the courage to come out in the public. She encouraged them to do so.

The Jenner/Sawyer primetime exclusive Friday attracted 16.9 million people–20/20’s biggest audience in 20 years.
