Cannes 2012: ‘In the Fog,’ ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ Win Critics Awards

International critics' association FIPRESCI honors "In the Fog," "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and "Hold Back"; Eucumenical Jury goes for "The Hunt"

FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics, has given its top Cannes prizes to Sergei Loznitsa's "In the Fog," Benh Zeitlin's "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and Rachid Djaidani's "Rengaine" ("Hold Back").

In the FogThe organization selects winners from two of the main sections at Cannes, and a third winner from two independent sections.

"In the Fog" (left), a drama set in German-occupied Russia in 1942, was chosen from the 22 films in the main competition.

"Beasts of the Southern Wild," which won the top dramatic award at Sundance in January and will be released this summer by Fox Searchlight, was chosen from the 20 films in the Un Certain Regard section.

"Rengaine" a Paris-set twist on "Romeo and Juliet," was selected from the 21 entries in the independent Directors Fortnight section and the seven entries in Critics Week.

Last year's FIPRESCI winners included Aki Kaurismaki's "Le Havre" and Jeff Nichols' "Take Shelter."

The Ecumenical Jury at Cannes also announced its main award to Thomas Vinterberg's "The Hunt," starring Mads Mikkelsen as a kindergarten teacher accused of child abuse, and a special mention to "Beasts of the Southern Wild."
