Cedric the Entertainer Nabs ‘Hot in Cleveland’ Spin-Off

He’ll play a minister in the untitled sitcom, which will be co-created by “Cleveland” scribe Suzanne Martin

Cedric the Entertainer will receive his own spin-off from "Hot in Cleveland," TV Land president Larry W. Jones announced Monday afternoon.

The "Barbershop" alum is set to appear in a multiple-episode arc of the hit show this summer, playing a minister who gets caught up in the exploits of the Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendy Malick and Betty White characters.

“This deal fits in perfectly with TV Land’s strategy of working with top talent both in front of and behind the camera," Jones said in a statement released by the network Monday. "We are so excited that Cedric is joining the TV Land family.”

The deal for the untitled sitcom is contingent on a pilot script, which will be co-written by Cedric the Entertainer and "Hot" creator Suzanne Martin. But that appears to be a mere formality.

“We’re definitely going to bring people quality entertainment and laughs with this new show,” said Cedric in the same statement. “I’m very excited to be working with TV Land and the creative team of ‘Hot in Cleveland.’”

TV Land, which launched as a Nick at Nite sister network in 1996 with an all-classic, all-the-time strategy, has made a strong push into original programming on the heels of the enormous success of "Hot in Cleveland," the highest-rated sitcom on cable.

Earlier this year, the network debuted its second-ever original program, "Retired at 35," starring George Sagal and Jessica Walter. The series has already been renewed for another season.

TV Land has also greenlighted two other sitcoms: "Happily Divorced," starring Fran Drescher, and "The Exes," starring Donald Faison and Wayne Knight.

Season three of "Hot in Cleveland," which will include Cedric the Entertainer's episodes, begins June 15.
