Chelsea Handler’s TV Empire Grows With NBC Scripted Pilot

The show will depict a twentysomething version of Handler, based on her trilogy of memoirs

Chelsea Handler may have bombed at the VMAs, but her TV career has never been in better shape.

Now the very busy late-night comedienne has landed a put-pilot deal with NBC based on her books, TheWrap has confirmed.

The autobiography “Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea” is also the name of the project, which Warner Bros. is producing and “Dharma & Greg” creators Julie Larson and Dotie Zicklin are adapting.

Handler will not be starring in the pilot; it centers on a version of Handler in her 20s, though not in the same profession.

It’s been a busy year for the hypersarcastic late-night host: Besides hosting the VMAs and “Chelsea Lately,” Handler is producing and starring in “After Lately,” which follows the behind-the-scenes goings-on at her nightly show on E!, and will star in McG’s “This Means War” opposite Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy.

Handler’s pilot, first reported Wednesday on Deadline, will also draw from her previous bestselling memoirs: "My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands," and "Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang."
