Chelsea Handler: Abortion at 16 Was the Right Thing to Do; Slams ’16 and Pregnant’

“Getting rewarded for being pregnant when you’re a teenager? Are you serious? I mean, that makes me want to kill somebody.”

Ripping the hit MTV reality series "16 and Pregnant," Chelsea Handler says she had an abortion at 16 because "that's what I should have done."

Handler — who hosts the E! talk show "Chelsea Lately" and has a new series based on her book, "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea" coming to NBC in the midseason of 2011-12 — lashed out at the MTV show during an interview with The New York Times, saying the reality show "makes me want to kill somebody."

"We’re seeking out such grossness in human behavior and want such mindless entertainment. ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ and some of these other shows are more racist," she said. "Or ‘16 and Pregnant.’ Getting rewarded for being pregnant when you’re a teenager? Are you serious? I mean, that makes me want to kill somebody.”

Handler, 36, also said she had an abortion when she was 16, and that it was the right thing to do.

“I had an abortion when I was 16, because that’s what I should have done," Handler said. "Otherwise, I would now have a 20-year-old kid. Anyway, those are things that people shouldn’t be dishonest about."

The "16 and Pregnant" spinoff series, "Teen Mom," was recently renewed for a fourth season.
