The Chin Strikes Back: Leno Attacks Letterman’s Marriage

After relentless comic assaults from Dave, Jay gets personal tonight

Jay Leno is going after David Letterman, answering his comic rival’s recent taunts with an attack on his private life.

"Letterman had been hammering me every night," Leno said tonight in the opening of "The Jay Leno Show," taped this afternoon for broadcast later this evening. "Hey Kev, you know the best way to get Letterman to ignore you? Marry him. He will not bother you. He won’t look you in the eye."

Dayuuuuum!

Leno seemed to realized he has escalated hostilities by bringing up Letterman’s confessed affairs with "Late Show" staffers.

According to NBC’s transcript, he followed up his joke by saying, "Here we go… get the ride going."

At the start of his monologue Wednesday, it seemed as if Leno were moving away from the late-night madness. He started with California rain jokes and other topics before finally getting to the LateNightCrisis.

He then quipped that the sequel to "Avatar" will be set 126 years in the future, or "about the same time NBC figures out what they’re going to do with late night."

After his jab at Letterman, Leno once again moved on to other topics.
